With the win, North Carolina now leads the Carlyle Cup standings, 5.5-2. The annual all-sport competition between Duke and North Carolina is in its 10th year of existence.
Vernon Breaks Freshman Receiving Record
With three catches for 21 yards, true freshman Conner Vernon broke Duke's freshman record for receiving yards. Vernon now has 583 yards, passing Walter Jones (578, 1988) for first on the Duke list and moving him into ninth in ACC history. Vernon extended his freshman receptions record to 41 catches, which ranks 11th most in ACC history.
Wright Records Fifth Interception
Senior cornerback Leon Wright tallied his fifth interception of the season and 10th of his career. His 10 career interceptions are tied for sixth all-time in Duke history with Robert Brodhead.
Wright Ranks Fourth For Season Interception Return Yards
After a 30-yard interception return by Wright, he now has 146 return yards this season to move into fourth on Duke's single season list. Wright ranked eighth nationally entering the game with 116 return yards.
Two Sacks For Defense
Seniors Ayanga Okpokowuruk and Vince Oghobaase each recorded a sack in the second quarter. Okpokowuruk tallied his team-leading fourth sack of the year and ninth of his career. Oghobaase now has 2.5 sacks this season while his 14 career sacks rank fifth all-time in Duke history.
Double Digit Tackles For Gainey
Senior safety Catron Gainey recorded his fourth career double digit tackle game and first of the season with 12 tackles against North Carolina. He had 10 solo tackles as part of his season high.
Byas Blocks Punt
Redshirt freshman Jordon Byas blocked a punt in the first quarter. It was the second blocked punt of the season for the Blue Devils and third blocked kick of the year. Sheldon Bell blocked a punt against N.C. Central and Charlie Hatcher had a blocked PAT attempt at Kansas. Under David Cutcliffe, Duke has five blocked kicks in 21 games.
Maggio Moves Into Top 10 For Career Field Goals
Junior Nick Maggio made 23 and 26-yard field goals in the first half for his first two made field goal of the season. He missed his first two field goal attempts of the year in the season opener against Richmond. He now has 15 made field goals in his career to rank tied for 10th all-time at Duke with William Reynolds (1960-62).
Lewis Climbs In Career Charts
No TDs for Blue Devil Offense
Duke failed to score an offensive touchdown for the first time this season and just the third time in head coach David Cutcliffe's two seasons at Duke.
Defense Holds North Carolina Under 20
The Duke defense held the Tar Heels to 19 points, marking the fifth time this season and the ninth time under Cutcliffe the defense has held the opposition under 20 points. Duke slips to 7-2 in those games.
