Duke falls to 12-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the ACC and stops a five-game win streak. The Blue Devils could unofficially earn the fifth or the sixth seed in the ACC Tournament, depending on the outcome of the Virginia vs. NC State game on Saturday night. The ACC Tournament kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 10, while Duke's first game will be on Nov. 11 at a time to be announced.
The opening 10 minutes were pretty even with both teams going forward with pace. The Demon Deacons earned a pair of corner kicks in the early minutes, but the Blue Devil defense was able to clear the ball out of danger both times.
Wake Forest (13-3-2, 5-2-1 ACC) had the first good look at goal in the 13th minute when Zack Schilawski's shot from 12 yards skipped just wide of the left post. The Demon Deacons got on the board 13:57 into the game with a goal from Andy Lubahn. Ike Opara sent a nice ball from the midfield to Justin Lichtfuss on the right flank. Lichtfuss slotted the ball across the face of the goal where Lubahn was able to fight off a Duke defender and deflect an attempted clearance into the goal for the early 1-0 lead.
Duke's best chance of the half came in the 25th minute as Temi Molinar broke loose on the left flank and got to the endline and served the ball into the box. Freshman Ryan Finley was able to get his head on the ball, sending it over the crossbar.
The Demon Deacons nearly made it a 2-0 game with a nifty play on a set piece from 20 yards. Corben Bone sent a pass into the box where?Schilawski back heeled a pass to Lubahn as the 12-yard mark.?Under pressure from the Blue?Devil defense, Lubahn sent a shot?just wide of the net.
With just over seven minutes left in the opening half, Duke's Christian Ibeagha nearly evened the score when his header sailed just wide of the far post to keep Wake Forest in front 1-0 at the break.
The Demon Deacons made it a 2-0 game just seven minutes into the second half. Schilawski collected a pass from Sam Redmond in the box and fired a shot off the post. The ball rebounded off the post across the face of the goal where Schilawski knocked it home for the two-goal advantage.
Wake Forest continued to attack the Blue Devil backline. Duke goalkeeper James Belshaw came up with a big point-blank save with just over 22 minutes left to play to keep it 2-0. The Demon Deacons' pressure was relentless as Chris Estridge pushed Wake Forest's lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 73rd minute. Bone provided the assist on the play.
Duke had a tough time generating attacking opportunities against Wake Forest's stalwart defense in the final 17 minutes. The Demon Deacons outshot the Blue Devils 19-9 for the game and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Belshaw had a strong outing in goal for Duke, making five saves, while Akira Fitzgerald had four saves in 83:30 of action.
The Blue Devils will dive into the postseason in the ACC Quarterfinals on Nov. 11 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.? The complete bracket will be announced on Monday, Nov. 9.
