Wenger captured first team recognition for the Blue Devils, while junior midfielder Cole Grossman was selected to the second team. Wenger and freshman forward Ryan Finley both were named to the All-Freshmen Team.
Starting all 17 games at center back, Wenger has helped anchor the Blue Devil defense to seven shutouts this season. He is the first Duke rookie to earn first team accolades since Ali Curtis did so in 1997 and the third Blue Devil to earn the Freshman of the Year award. He leads the team in minutes, playing all by 42 minutes and has been equally dangerous in the offensive third of the field with eight points from three goals and two assists, including two game-winning scores.
Grossman captured All-ACC recognition for the first time in his career after earning All-Freshman Team honors in 2007. Starting all 17 games in the midfield, the native of St. Louis, Mo., currently leads the team with 24 points from seven goals and 10 assists. He ranks second in the ACC in points and assists and is eighth in the nation in assists per game. Named the ACC Player of the Week once and selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week twice this season, Grossman has tallied at least one point in all but four games and has had a hand in every goal in five games this year.
Finley rounds out the selections for Duke after tallying a team-best nine goals and 22 points overall during the regular season. A native of Lumberton, N.J., Finley registered his first collegiate goal in the win over Columbia and has scored at least one goal in eight games. He posted a career-best two goals in a 3-0 win over UNC Greensboro on Oct. 13 and was named the ACC Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the 2-0 upset of No. 2 Maryland.
Duke opens postseason play on Nov. 11 in the ACC Tournament. The sixth-seeded Blue Devils will take on No. 3 seed Boston College at 2:30 p.m., at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
