DURHAM, N.C. - Coming off a school-record four straight overtime matches, the Duke women's soccer team struggled on Sunday against 22nd-ranked Maryland as the Blue Devils fell, 4-0, at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke fell to 4-5-3 overall and 0-2-1 in the ACC, while Maryland improved to 9-2-0, 1-2-0.
"We were not prepared and we didn't play as hard as we have been playing in the past," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "It starts with me. I don't think our coaching staff had them as prepared as we need to. Obviously, the responsibility goes with the players [as well]. It is all of us together. Maryland did a great job. They wanted to win and there was a great desire."
In a first half that the Blue Devils would like to forget, Maryland started on the attack in the first five minutes and never let up. The Terrapins took their first shot at the 3:30 mark of the first stanza by Caitlin Mcdowell and then Jasmyne Spencer added another shot a minute and a half later, which were both saved by Duke freshman goalkeeper Tara Campbell.
Maryland got on the board just 10:38 into the contest as Lydia Hastings had a throw-in to Danielle Hubka, who settled it and rocketed a shot that nipped the right post and went into the corner of the net.
The Blue Devils netted their first shot of the day off the head of senior KayAnne Gummersall almost two minutes later that went high. Maryland kept the ball on its side of the field for most of the first 45 minutes and increased its lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute off the foot of Molly Dreska.
Maryland kept pushing the Blue Devil defense and connected on its third goal of the match in the 37th minute as Jasmyne Spencer netted her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Hodak.
Duke notched its second shot of the first half as time expired when senior Elisabeth Redmond sent a shot that went wide.
At the end of the first half, Maryland held a 12-2 shot advantage. Campbell had five saves in the first stanza.
"Everybody has these advantages, but they have been off all week," said Church. "We have had four [straight] overtimes and we have a very thin squad. That is where we are and who we are right now. This is the ACC. If you don't prepare yourself and you are not ready to play you are going to get punished. That is what happened today."
Duke came out in the second half on the attack as junior Lynnea Pappas fired a right-footed attempt that Terrapin goalkeeper Mary Casey saved. Junior Gretchen Miller came right back with a shot of her own that was saved as well. Both shots came in the 46th minute for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils had another excellent run of play in the 57th minute as sophomore Chelsea Canepa took a feed down the right side and sent a right-footed blast from just outside the box that hit just wide of the right post.
Duke couldn't manage any other scoring chances in the second stanza and then Maryland added a goal with 20 seconds left in the match. Kristen Mcafee kicked a long ball that took a very high bounce at the top of the box. Campbell and Terrapin Sade Ayinde both leaped for the ball and Ayinde headed it toward the goal. Duke defender Libby Jandl tried to catch up to the ball but it rolled into the right corner.
For the game, Maryland outshot Duke, 16-7, but the Blue Devils held a 5-4 advantage in the second half. A product of Cincinnati, Ohio, Campbell finished the match with seven saves.
"This is one game," commented Church. "We played poorly one game and it has really been the only time all year, if you look at us what we have done over our body of work. When you have a bad game in the ACC, you are playing somebody who is going to punish you. That is exactly going to happen. It is important for us to make sure we understand that it is one game, push it aside, we have a couple of days off because we don't play until next Sunday -- come back and go back to work."
Duke will remain at home and will host fifth-ranked Florida State next Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
