DURHAM, N.C. -- Playing its fourth straight ranked Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent, the Duke women's soccer team came away with a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday afternoon against fifth-ranked Florida State at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils have now tied two top 10 ranked foes -- No. 5 FSU and No. 9 Wake Forest, while taking then No. 1 North Carolina to overtime. With the tie on Sunday, Duke moves to 4-5-4 overall and 0-2-2 in the ACC, while Florida State goes to 10-2-1 and 3-1-1.
Duke came out on Sunday featuring a different lineup and a 4-4-2 formation, which held the high-scoring Seminoles to only four shots over the first 45 minutes of action. Moving to midfield for the first time this season, Duke freshman Nicole Lipp attempted the first shot of the day that went high.
The Blue Devils had the first excellent scoring opportunity of the half as freshman Maddy Haller made a run down the left side of the field and served a left-footed ball into the box to sophomore Chelsea Canepa in the 21st minute. Canepa, who is out of Phoenix, Ariz., fired a shot towards the left side of the goal but a FSU defender was able to save the ball off the line. Blue Devil senior Elisabeth Redmond then sent a shot in a little over a minute later that Seminole goalkeeper Erin McNulty saved alongside the right post.
In the 26th minute, Florida State had a chance of its own as the Seminoles had a throw-in that eventually came at the feet of Ines Jaurena, who blasted a shot at the Duke goal from 12 yards out. Blue Devil freshman Erin Koballa saved the ball for Duke to preserve the shutout.
Florida State held a 4-0 lead in corner kicks in the first stanza.
"I thought it worked great," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church on the formation change. "First off, I want to compliment our team -- I thought they played really, really hard today. This time last week, we were on this field and we got embarrassed by the University of Maryland. We challenged them all week -- we were fortunate to have some time off and we gave them time off. They really responded by a very, very good effort. They played hard."
The second half featured more offensive action for the Seminoles as Florida State outshot Duke 12-5 and the Blue Devils escaped a tremendous FSU shot off the head of Jessica Price that went just wide in the 55th minute.
Duke had two excellent scoring chances in the second half as junior Gretchen Miller sent a feed down the field over the Seminole defense to Redmond, who headed the ball at the right side of the goal and McNulty made a diving stop in the 59th minute.
Later in the match, Redmond used her right foot for a corner kick to Miller who rocketed an attempt that zipped just past the right post in the 87th minute.
In the first overtime, both teams attempted one shot each and FSU added another shot in the second overtime but neither teams could get anything in the back of the net.
For the match, Florida State held an 18-9 shot advantage and 11-6 lead in corner kicks.
"I thought we fought really well out there," said Haller. "I thought the defense did a great job organizing. We did a lot of preparation before the game -- knowing Florida [State's] formation. We came out and we really performed well. We did exactly what we planned to do."
Duke goalkeeper Tara Campbell had eight saves in the net as she played the entire 110 minutes. A product of Cincinnati, Ohio, Campbell now owns four shutouts on the season and two against top 10 teams. McNulty added two saves for Florida State.
"For her to come off a performance she was embarrassed of herself and play like this against a top-notch team is very, very impressive," commented Church on Campbell's performance.
Lipp, who is out of Lake Forest, Ill., matched a career-high with three shots on the day, while Redmond added three attempts as well for Duke. The Blue Devils were shutout for the third straight match and haven't scored a goal since Sept. 24 at North Carolina.
"We felt like if we could defend set plays well and if we could take away their two front runners -- we dodged one bullet late down here when one got inside us, but overall we did a good job of making them work and making their looks very difficult."
The Blue Devils will conclude a three-game homestand on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m., against Miami.
