PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -Duke University sophomore Monica Gorny won a pair of singles matches to advance to the round of 16 today in the prequalifying round for the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. Also in action for the Blue Devil women's tennis team was Elizabeth Plotkin. They both lined up in singles and doubles.
In singles action, Gorny registered a pair of wins to move into the round of 16. She opened the day with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sarah Landsman of Arizona. Gorny came out in her second match and battled her way through three sets for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over fourth-seeded Rachael White of Illinois.
She will take on Lutflana Budiharto in the final match of the prequalifying round tomorrow at 3 p.m. (ET). The winner advances into the qualifying round on Oct. 6.
Plotkin was able to force a third set, but lost a hard-fought battle to TCU's Megan Alexander 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
Playing together for the first time in doubles, Gorny and Plotkin fell to the duo from Sacramento State 8-7.
