PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.-Duke University sophomore Monica Gorny returned to the tennis courts today in an attempt to earn a spot in the qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. She posted two wins on Saturday to earn a spot in the round of 32.
Gorny took on Lutflana Budiharto of Wichita State with the winner taking a spot in the qualifying round starting on Oct. 6. The South African native battled hard, but dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision. Gorny is 5-2 as a member of the Blue Devils.
Lining up for Duke in the qualifying round is Amanda Granson in singles and Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka in doubles action. Granson will take on ACC foe Emily Fraser of Virginia in her opening match. In doubles, Nze and Zsilinszka are matched up against the seventh-seeded tandem of Hilary Barlett and Taylor Marable of Princeton University.
The qualifying rounds will begin on Oct. 6-7. Players who earn three wins will advance into the main draw for the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship.
