GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke is in a tie for seventh after firing a two-round team score of 290-283=573 (three-under par) at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate today in Greensboro, N.C. Freshman Julian Suri is four-under par for the tournament, tied for 10th individually.
"We had stretches of good play, and the guys should hang their hat on that," head coach Jamie Green said. "But I definitely think there are some holes and shots out there...if we go out there again, we could do it differently. There is still a round to go; we will see what we can put up tomorrow."
The 21st-ranked Blue Devils had two strong showings from a pair of freshman. Suri fired a 70 (two-under par) in the first round, the best Duke score in the first 18 holes. Suri started off with an eagle at the par-five fourth, which was just inches away from being a double-eagle. The St. Augustine, Fla. native was one of only seven players to eagle the fourth hole today. Suri had five birdies and five bogeys in his first 18 holes.
"During my first round I made a few mistakes, but my second round I played steady and solid," Suri said. "I played well and I capitalized on the opportunities that I had."
Fellow newcomer Brinson Paolini carded a 73 (one-under par) in the first round. Paolini was even on the back-nine after scoring a 37 on the front-nine. The Virginia Beach, Va., native put together a great second round, firing a 69 to go three-under par, the best Blue Devil round of the day. Paolini played his last 11 holes in two-under par.
"It was a good day," Paolini said. "I got off to a tough start in the first round but I settled in and played really well my last 27 holes. It was good to be under-par and help the team out."
"I'm really pleased with the opportunities they [Paolini and Suri] gave themselves to score," coach Green added. "They are walking out each round thinking it could be better, and that's the right attitude to have."
Senior Adam Long fired a 73-72= 145 to finish at one-over par. Long had seven birdies and eight bogeys on the day. Junior Wes Roach carded rounds of 74-72=146 (two-over par). Freshman Adam Sumrall had a 72 in the first round, but finished with a 76 over his last 18 holes to finish six-over par.
Junior Matthew Pierce, sophomore Spencer Anderson and freshman Tim Gornik all competed as individuals at Forest Oaks CC. Anderson sits in a tie for 10th at four-under par. Pierce is in a tie for 27th at even-par and Gornik is one-over par, in a tie for 34th place.
Duke will be teeing it up in the final round tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. Suri will be the last Blue Devil going off at 9:06 a.m.
