CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Playing in only her second stroke play event of her collegiate career, Duke University freshman Courtney Ellenbogen turned in a fourth place finish at the Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday as she closed with a two-under-par, 70, at the 6,285-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
A product of Blacksburg, Va., Ellenbogen posted rounds of 70, 73 and 70 over the three days for a career-best total of 213, which was three-under-par. On Sunday, she opened with three pars before suffering a bogey on the 10th hole, after kicking off her action on hole No. 7. Ellenbogen then played her final 14 holes at three-under-par with birdies on 12, 17 and 18. For the day, she hit 15 greens, 13 fairways and had 30 putts.
"I am very happy for Courtney," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "She has been working real hard making some changes [in her swing] and she saw the fruits of her labor. I am very happy for her."
Taking the individual title was Louisville's Sara-Maude Juneau (206) with Laura Kueny of Michigan State (212) and Marina Alex of Vanderbilt (212) tied for second.
As a team, Duke placed seventh with rounds of 299, 289 and 295 for a total of 883. Michigan State won the team title with a four-under-par, 860, while Auburn (872), Alabama (875), Texas A&M (880), Vanderbilt (880), Tennessee (881), Duke (883), Virginia (884), Wake Forest (885) and Louisville (887) rounded out the top 10.
"It is important that we pay attention to the positives whenever we play in a tournament," said Brooks. "There are a lot of positives in this tournament and I am excited about our next one. We are going to the NCAA Fall Preview in Wilmington the weekend after next. I think this will be a good period of work between now and then. All of us can play better and we need to get better. We need to be the ones going under par as a team -- that is going to be what it takes this year. We will get better, it is going to just take some time."
Fellow Blue Devil freshman Lindy Duncan continued her solid play as she posted an even-par, 72, on Sunday on her way to finishing tied for 11th with a 54-hole ledger of 218. Duncan, who is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., had four birdies and four bogeys on the day, while hitting 13 greens, eight fairways and notching 31 putts.
For the second straight tournament, junior Kim Donovan turned in solid results as she carded rounds of 76, 74 and 74 for a total of 224, which was tied for 42nd. A native of Hopkinton, Mass., Donovan hit 11 fairways, 12 greens and had 32 putts in her round on Sunday as she notched one birdie on No. 17.
Coming off an even-par, 72, on Saturday, senior Alison Whitaker struggled on Sunday as she carded an 81. She concluded the tournament with a 231, which was tied for 68th. Freshman Stacey Kim also had a tough time in the final round as she fired a 79 on her way to placing tied for 75th with a 233.
Duke was only able to notch 10 birdies on Sunday. The Blue Devils will next travel to Wilmington, N.C., for the NCAA Fall Preview from Oct. 23-25.
