DURHAM, N.C. ? Following a training session earlier this month, U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team Head Coach Bill Irwin has announced the 18-player roster that will travel to Europe from Jan. 31-Feb. 7. The roster includes Duke senior Lorraine Quinn, who will play two matches as part of a three-team competition in La Manga, Spain. The USA will face Norway on Feb. 4 and England on Feb. 6.
Quinn, a native of Farmingdale, N.Y., earned All-Region honors for the second straight year following another solid season in the midfield position for the Blue Devils. In the 2008 season, Quinn notched five goals, seven assists and 17 points for the Blue Devils. She notched a career day against Georgia with three goals, which all came in the first half. Quinn also posted two game-winning goals.
For Quinn, this marks the sixth straight training session she has attended with the U-23 squad as over the summer she also traveled to the Nordic Cup in Sweden.
Over her career at Duke, Quinn played in 91 matches, while posting 13 goals, 19 assists and 45 points.
This will be the first U.S. U-23 roster that features a majority of professional players with 11 of the 18 having been drafted by clubs in the new WPS. During the three years that the WUSA was in existence, this youth national team was run as a U-21 program, meaning the player pool for the USA's oldest women's youth national team were almost all in college and/or amateur players. Eleven of the players on the roster for the two matches in Spain have been capped at the U-23 level, lead by goalkeeper Val Henderson, who has patrolled the nets 14 times for the U.S. U-23s.
These will be the first international matches of the year for the U.S. U-23s, which piled up an 11-1-2 overall record in 2008, including a mark of 8-1-1 in international games. The U-23s won the annual Nordic Cup in resounding fashion, winning all four matches in Sweden against Europe's top U-23 teams without allowing a goal, including a 3-0 victory against Germany in the championship game.
