FRANKLIN, TENN. ? Led by a five-under-par, 67, on Saturday by senior Jennie Lee, the Duke women's golf team turned in a one-under-par, 287, in the second round at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship, which is being played at the Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn.
Lee's round of 67 matches her career best, which also took place at the Mason Rudolph Championship in 2006 during the first round. With her five-under-par score, Lee now enters the final round tied for seventh with a 140.
In the team standings, Duke owns a 36-hole total of 579 and is fifth. UCLA posted a 13-under-par, 275, on Saturday to take over the lead with a 562. Oklahoma State (568), Southern California (573), Duke (579), Arizona State (580), Florida (588), Alabama (590), Purdue (596) and Arkansas (597) rounded out the top 10.
“Obviously, we have a little ways to go on our team score,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “We pretty much have to stay under par to compete and win these things. But it was nice to get under par. The thing that I liked the most about today is we got pretty considerable contributions from various players. It is nice to see Jennie shooting the kind of scores we are used to seeing her shoot. [Alison] Whitaker -- she has been working a little bit on her swing and it looks like she is coming into it a little bit. I cannot say enough about Kim Donovan for the hard work she is putting in right now and developing. It is just a matter of time with what she is doing. Of course, Amanda is under par -- not as far under but she is still under par. I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
A product of Henderson, Nev., Lee turned in a very exciting round which included two eagles, three birdies and two bogeys. She kicked off her day with a birdie, but suffered two bogeys over two out of the next five holes as she fell to one-over-par. Lee responded with her fifth eagle of her career on the 465-yard, par five seventh hole. She parred the next two holes as she made the turn with a one-under-par, 35.
On the back nine, Lee parred the first five holes before closing with a birdie, par, birdie and eagle. Her eagle on the 18th came off a great fairway wood approach which landed 30 feet from the hole. Lee holed the 30-footer to close out the day.
