FRANKLIN, TENN. ? Coming off a one-under-par, 287, on Saturday at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate Championship, the Duke women's golf team looked to have a strong third day in Sunday's final round, but the Blue Devils struggled with a 303 to finish sixth at the Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn.
Taking home the tournament crown was UCLA with a 54-hole total of 850, while Southern California (856), Oklahoma State (863), Oklahoma State (863), Vanderbilt (868), Arizona State (873), Duke (882), Alabama (883), Purdue (890), Auburn (891) and Florida 894) rounded out the top 10. As a team, Duke compiled rounds of 292, 287 and 303 to finish with an 882.
“I said to the team -- everybody kept working hard, we are doing some things with some games and we are going to keep on getting better and better,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “That is the way we focus. That is the way we stay focused on at all times -- all the way until the very end of the season. We take this in stride. Nothing stops -- you keep on moving and you keep on improving.”
On Sunday, no Blue Devil shot under par as senior Jennie Lee totaled a team-best two-over-par, 74, and fellow senior Amanda Blumenherst added in a three-over-par, 75. As a team, Duke collected 17 birdies in round one, 11 on day two and only seven in the final round. The Blue Devils were also playing without freshman Mina Harigae, who has a wrist injury.
Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., opened her day with a bogey on No. 1 but came back to birdie two out of the next six holes to move to one-under-par. She remained one-under until the 17th hole when she notched a triple-bogey and Lee finished with a par on 18. Lee finished tied for 10th overall with a 214.
A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst also concluded the tournament tied for 10th with a 214. She finished the weekend with a 75, after opening with a rough start on Sunday. Blumenherst went bogey, par, par and double-bogey over her first four holes. She closed with an even-par score over her final 14 holes with two bogeys and two birdies.
Junior Alison Whitaker had a solid start with a one-over-par, 37, on the front nine before finishing with a wild back nine. She holed in from 111 yards with a nine iron on No. 10, but then had two double-bogeys, three bogeys, one birdie and two pars to finish with a 77. Overall, she finished tied for 53rd with a 54-hole total of 228.
“It was into the wind and uphill so I hit a nine iron,” said Whitaker on her eagle from the fairway. “I couldn't hit it better and it went in.”
Both Kim Donovan and Yu Young Lee closed with a 77 on the final day and each finished tied for 60th with a 230.
Duke will next travel to the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif., from Oct. 17-19.
