ATHENS, Ga. ? Reid Carleton advanced to the quarterfinals in Division I singles while Aaron Carpenter and David Lue each moved on to the semifinals of their brackets with victories on Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
Carleton, the No. 6 seed in the tournament earned two victories to move on to the quarterfinals. He started the day with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sebastian Jacques of Virginia Tech. Carleton then won a third set tiebreaker in the round of 16, defeating Kentucky's Brad Cox 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
After earning two victories on Friday, Carpenter continued his success in the Division III bracket with two more wins on day two. He downed Wake Forest's Joost Vogel 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to start the day and then won his quarterfinal match against UT-Martin's Andrv Yesipov 6-4, 6-3. Lue also won twice in the Division III bracket to make the semifinals. He earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gary Bertoldo of Lander and then won 6-4, 6-2 against Charlie Martin-LeCamp of Charlotte in the quarterfinals.
Three other Blue Devils earned singles victories on Saturday. Freshman Luke Marchese won 6-3, 6-2 against Sergio Valex of East Tennessee State in the round of 32 of the Division II draw but would later lose in the round of 16 to Javier Tori of USC-Upstate. After losing their opening singles match, Kiril Dimitrov and Dylan Arnould each bounced back with victories. Dimitrov won 6-3, 6-3 over Tyler Hochwalt of Florida while Arnould defeated Francisco Riveroll of Jacksonville 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6).
Freshman Torsten Wietoska took No. 23 Jamie Hunt of Georgia to the wire but fell just short of a win. Hunt won the first set 6-3 but Wietoska forced a third set with a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker win in the second set. In the end it was Hunt taking a 6-4 victory to advance to the round of 16.
Dimitrov and Alain Michel advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division I bracket in doubles with an upset win over the No. 2 seed and 22nd-ranked Florida duo of Tyler Hochwalt and Jeff Dadamp, 8-6.
Carpenter and Jared Pinsky won twice in doubles on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division II draw. They cruised to an 8-1 victory over James Moye and Scott Lieberman of Vanderbilt early in the day and then won 8-3 against Martin-LeCamp and Anthony Davison of Charlotte.
The tournament is being hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Singles and doubles action will continue on Sunday with the bracket finals on Monday.
