EUGENE, Ore. ? On Thursday at the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur, Duke University senior Amanda Blumenherst made quick work of her second round and Sweet 16 opponents to advance to the quarterfinals of match play at the 6,484-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club.
Blumenherst, who is a product of Scottsdale, Ariz., rolled to a 4 and 3 morning victory over Nikki Koller and then steemrolled past Ellen Mueller, 7 and 6, into the quarterfinals.
In her second round match against Koller, Blumenherst won holes three, four and five to take a 3 up lead and never looked back. She registered five birdies over her 15 holes of play.
“I am starting to get the course down now,” said Blumenherst after playing just 27 holes in the two victories. “Some of the fairways really kick one way or the other. It takes a few rounds to really get to know a course.”
The reigning three-time National Player of the Year, Blumenherst then picked up her game even more in the afternoon to collect five birdies in 12 holes to knock off Mueller. Blumenherst opened with her best start of match play with four birdies over the first nine holes and led 6 up as they made the turn. Both golfers made pars on No. 10 and each bogied the 11th before Blumenherst closed the match with a birdie on the 168-yard, par three 13th.
Blumenherst, who is seeded second and was co-medalist in the stroke play qualifying, will next face seventh-seeded Carlota Ciganda at 2:40 p.m. (EST) on Friday.
Fans can follow the action from Aug. 8-9 on The Golf Channel from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The championship will be aired from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Sunday on The Golf Channel. Former Duke standout Virada Nirapathpongporn became the first Blue Devil to win the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2003 as she knocked out Jane park, 2 & 1, at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.
The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of the United States Golf Association's original three championships. It was first conducted in 1895, shortly after the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The Women's Amateur has since been conducted every year except 1917-18, when it was temporarily suspended because of World War I, and 1942-45, when it was suspended because of World War II.
