Durham, N.C. ? Former Duke men's basketball player Luol Deng was named the recipient of the 2008 UN Refugee Agency's Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Deng will be recognized for his efforts with the UNHCR's ninemillion.org campaign to bring education and sports to millions of displaced children. He pledged $50 for every basket he scored with the Chicago Bulls this past season and he urged fans to support his efforts to improve the lives of young refugees.
An All-ACC third team performer in 2004, Deng helped lead Duke to a 31-6 overall record and to the NCAA Final Four. The Blue Devils went 13-3 in the ACC that season. He was named to the ACC All-Tournament second team and the All-South Regional team.
Deng, a former refugee from south Sudan, will receive the award at the agency's annual World Refugee Day ceremony tomorrow at the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C.
