DURHAM, N.C. --- Caroline Cryer and Katie Chrest will represent the United States at the Prague Cup beginning next week in preparation for the 2009 World Cup. The tournament will take place from June 25-28, 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic.
Cryer and Chrest are members of the U.S. touring team, which consists of 18 members and six alternates that were selected from the 48 players on the U.S. Elite and Developmental teams following the U.S. Lacrosse Champions Challenge in January in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Training camp for the Prague Cup began this week.
Duke is one of only six schools with more than one player on the roster. The others include Northwestern with three and Dartmouth, James Madison, Maryland and North Carolina with two each.
The U.S. team will be one of 12 that will compete in the women's tournament, six of which are national teams preparing for August's European Cup in Finland and the 2009 World Cup. The Prague Cup field will include five nations other than the USA -- the Czech Republic, England, Germany, Scotland and Wales.
The 2009 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations World Cup will also be held in the Czech Republic. Australia defeated the U.S. in the 2005 World Cup in Annapolis, Md., ending a run of four straight U.S. world championships.
Cryer, a native of Cherry Creek, Colo., was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist in 2007 when she scored a school record 71 goals. She was a consensus first team All-America by IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse, Inside Lacrosse and Womenslacrosse.com. Cryer also earned an NCAA All-Tournament team selection, a spot on the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse All-South first team and was an All-ACC team choice. Cryer is currently in ninth place on the career goals list at Duke with 124, stands in seventh place on the career assists list with 43 and is in eighth place on the career points list with 167. She played just the first game of the 2008 Blue Devil campaign before she was sidelined with a foot injury.
Chrest was the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy winner as a junior at Duke. The product of Hampstead, Md., holds schools records in goals (216), points (287) and shots (528). She was also a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist in 2006 and a three-time All-America selection. Chrest earned All-South region accolades all four years as a Blue Devil and was an All-ACC choice twice. She earned ACC All-Tournament team honors three times, including MVP in 2005, and was an NCAA All-Tournament team member is 2006. Chrest was a volunteer assistant to the Maryland women's lacrosse team this past season.
Duke went 13-8 in 2008, placed third in the ACC at 3-2 and reached the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season despite losing seven of 12 starters from 2007 to graduation and injury. The Blue Devils will return nine of 12 starters from this year's squad in 2009 and will have Cryer back after missing the season due to a foot injury.
