DURHAM, N.C. --- Duke will play No. 2 seed Penn on Friday at 8:30 p.m., in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. This marks Duke's fourth straight trip to the national semifinals and fifth appearance overall. Ticket information is available on www.ticketmaster.com. The Blue Devils: Duke is 13-7 this season and finished third with a 3-2 mark in the ACC. The Blue Devils hold a 6-7 record over ranked teams and a 4-5 mark over top 10 competition. Duke is 2-0 this year in neutral site matchups, which included wins over Stanford in Dallas, Texas, and Virginia Tech in Charlottesville, Va.
Duke in the NCAA Tournament: The Blue Devils are 12-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have made five trips to the national semifinals, in 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007 and now 2008. Duke has reached the quarterfinals in seven of the nine years since the tournament expanded to 16 teams and has won their opening round game in eight of 11 tournament trips. The Blue Devils are making their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, which is tied for the third-longest run in Division I behind only Maryland's 18-year run and Virginia's 13-year run. Duke is 0-5 at neutral sites in the NCAA Tournament, while at home it is 10-3 and on the road is 2-2. Prior to this season, the Blue Devils had never won an NCAA Tournament game away from home. Duke has never played Penn in the tournament and is 1-1 against Ivy League schools in the NCAA's.
The Quakers: Penn is 16-1 this season and won the Ivy League title at 7-0. Its only loss came at Stanford, 10-8, on March 9. The Quakers are 7-1 versus ranked opposition in 2008 and 4-0 versus opponents in the top 10. Last year, Penn advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champion Northwestern, 12-2.
Series History: Duke is 2-0 all-time against Penn, with the teams having played a home-and-home series in 2002 and 2003. The Blue Devils won 13-7 at home in 2002 and 15-5 on the road in 2003.
Rankings: In the latest Inside Lacrosse rankings, Duke was ranked No. 11. The most recent IWLCA poll has the Blue Devils at No. 12. Penn is ranked No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse poll and tied with Northwestern for No. 1 in the IWLCA rankings.
On The Horizon: If the Blue Devils should defeat the Quakers, they will play the winner of the No. 1 Northwestern-No. 5 Syracuse match in the national championship game on Sunday, May 25 at Johnny Unitas Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
