CHATTANOOGA, TENN. -- The Duke men's golf season came to a close on Saturday as the team shot a final round 295 at Council Fire Golf Club to finish 19th overall with an 11-over 863 at the NCAA East Regional. Senior Michael Schachner and freshman Matthew Pierce paced the Blue Devils in the final round with one-over 72s.
Georgia ran away with the East Regional with a 41-under 811, 21 strokes better than second place Augusta State (-20). UC-Irvine (-16), Mississippi State (-14), UAB (-13), Auburn (-12), Charlotte (-8), East Tennessee State (-7), Middle Tennessee State (-6) and Virginia (-3) each advanced on to the NCAA Championships with top 10 finishes.
Pierce opened the final round with back-to-back birdies and followed a par on the next hole with two more birdies to move to four-under through five holes of play. He suffered bogeys on No. 16 and No. 18 to make the turn at two-under. Pierce moved back to three-under with a birdie on the par 5 second hole but suffered bogeys on No. 3 and No. 4. He rebounded with three straight pars before running out of stream to finish bogey-bogey for a one-over 72. Pierce closed the tournament with a one-under 212 to finish tied for 35th overall.
Schachner recorded four birdies, nine pars and five bogeys en route to a 72 in his final round of play as a Blue Devil. The Libertyville, Ill., native closed the tournament with a four-over 217 to finish tied for 77th. Schachner ends the year with a 71.75 stroke average, the second lowest season stroke average in school history.
Freshman Wes Roach shot a three-over 74 on Saturday to finish with an even-par 213 (T-38th) for the event. The Knoxville, Tenn., native started slow with a pair of bogeys on his opening four holes. He rebounded to birdie the par 3 14th, but suffered a double-bogey on No. 18 to make the turn at three-over. Roach caught fire with three straight birdies to open the front side and move back to even-par, but bogeys on No. 4, No. 8 and No. 9 moved him back to three-over for the day.
Junior Clark Klaasen and sophomore Adam Long struggled throughout the final round en route to six-over 77s. Klaasen had 12 pars and six bogeys on the day and finished the tournament tied for 104th with a nine-over 222. Long posted a pair of birdies but also had eight bogeys on Saturday. He finished tied for 121st with a 12-over 225.
Duke's season comes to a close with the 19th place finish at the East Regional. The Blue Devils posted two wins (Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic & River Landing Intercollegiate) on the year and finished in the top 5 of six of 11 tournaments played.
