GREENSBORO, N.C. ? The 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's and Women's Lacrosse Championships begin Thursday, April 24 on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., with the opening draw at Scott Stadium at 1 p.m. ET between the third-seeded Duke women and a sixth-seeded Virginia Tech squad.
The three-day event will split action between the Cavalier's lacrosse field, Kl?ckner Stadium, where the men will play, and Scott Stadium, which hosted the Division I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1977 and 1982, and will be the site of this year's Women's Championship.
The Championships will showcase some of the best lacrosse competition in the country as three of the four ACC men's programs are ranked in the Top 5 and all four within the Top 10, while four out of six ACC women's programs are ranked in the Top 12.
A thin margin separates Duke and Syracuse for the top pick in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse Men's Division I Media Poll, as the Blue Devils took 10 first place votes to Syracuse's nine, edging the Orange by just one overall point. Virginia maintains at No. 3, while Georgetown and Johns Hopkins round out the men's Top 5.
On the women's side of Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll, No. 2 Maryland, No. 4 Virginia No. 11 North Carolina and No. 12 Duke represent the ACC in the nation's Top 20.
Since the first ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1989, there have been six tournament sites, including a one-year stop in Orlando, Fla. This year the city of Charlottesville will play host for the seventh time. To date, North Carolina has won three times in Charlottesville, including the Tar Heels' last ACC Championship title in 1996.
Four ACC men's coaches have won league crowns in Charlottesville, while Virginia's Dom Starsia, who has claimed two championship titles at home and five overall, is the only active head coach to have picked up the title in Charlottesville.
Duke claimed its fourth overall ACC Championship title last year (1995, 2001, 2002 & 2007) and the Blue Devils' first since 2002. Junior Zack Greer had three goals and three assists and senior Matt Danowski added three goals and an assist to lead the top seeded Blue Devils to a 12-9 win over Virginia to claim the 2007 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The 12th annual ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship, which began in 1997, has been held in Charlottesville three previous times. Maryland picked up two of those crowns (1997 and 2003), while Virginia captured the title in 1998, making UVa's head coach Julie Myers the only active ACC women's coach to earn a crown in Charlottesville.
Entering this week's Championship, Virginia defends a two-year title stint as the Cavs picked up league crowns in Baltimore, Md. in 2006 and Chapel Hill, NC in 2007. Led by goalkeeper Kendall McBrearty and midfielder Ashley McCulloch, who set a pair of ACC and school records before the game was over, fourth-seeded UVa secured a 12-6 victory over No. 3 seed North Carolina at Fetzer Field, giving the Cavs their fourth overall championship title.
The two championships held at one site will allow ACC and lacrosse fans alike to experience both the men's and women's league tournaments as tickets purchased for any intended session will be recognized at both locations.
Capacity for Virginia's Kl?ckner Stadium will be capped at 8,000 and that figure will be in effect for the ACC Championship April 25 & 27.
