The Blue Devils, who stand at 12-1 on the year and face Army this Saturday in Manhasset, N.Y., posted a perfect 3-0 record in ACC regular season play for the third time in the past four years. Over the past four years, Duke has posted a 10-1 ledger in conference regular season action and is 15-2 against ACC opponents overall.
Duke captured the 2007 ACC Tournament championship in Durham with wins over North Carolina (13-9) and Virginia (12-9). Matt Danowski was named the event's MVP after a five-goal, five-assist weekend and was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammates Zack Greer, Bo Carrington, Casey Carroll and Dan Loftus. The ACC Tournament crown marked the fourth for the Blue Devils, who also won the title in 1995, 2001 and 2002.
Duke's run to the 2008 ACC regular season championship was an impressive one as head coach John Danowski's club outscored its three foes by a combined score of 53-25 in victories over Maryland (15-7), North Carolina (19-9) and Virginia (19-9). All three opponents were ranked among the top five teams in the national polls at the time of each game.
The 53 goals rank as the second-highest total since the league dropped to four competing schools prior to the 1983 season, with only Virginia scoring more goals in its three conference tilts by posting a 56-marker performance in 1990. Other teams to produce 50 or more goals in conference regular season action since 1983 are North Carolina (51 in 1990) and Virginia (52 in 1997)
In addition, Duke's goal differential of +28 in its three league games is the highest since the ACC went to four clubs, eclipsing the previous mark of +25 set by both Maryland in 1987 and North Carolina in 1988. Other squads to register a goal difference of +20 or better include North Carolina (+22 in 1984), Virginia (+21 in 1984) and Virginia (+23 in 1990).
The Blue Devils also became the first team to win 10 ACC regular season games in a four-year stretch since Virginia turned the trick from 1997-00. North Carolina posted 10 league regular season victories in a span of four years on four occasions (1988-91, 1989-92, 1990-93 & 1991-94) while Virginia set the standard in the current four-team era (1983-present) with 11 wins from 1983-86.
