DURHAM, N.C. -- Former Duke All-America defensive back Ernie Jackson has been selected for induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Jackson will join Mike Dunleavy, Levon Kirkland, Bob Bolin, Dottie Pepper, Carl Williams and Tom Price in the Hall's Class of 2008.
The induction ceremony will take place on May 19 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
Jackson was a consensus first team All-America pick and ACC Player of the Year as a senior at Duke in 1971. He was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. Following his playing days at Duke, Jackson played in the Hula Bowl and was a seventh round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 1972 NFL Draft. He went on to play eight seasons professionally with New Orleans, Atlanta and Detroit and registered 13 career pass interceptions.
Dunleavy, currently the head coach of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers and father of former Duke basketball standout Mike Dunleavy, enjoyed a successful playing career at the University of South Carolina. Kirkland was an All-America football player at Clemson while Bolin spent 13 seasons as a pitcher in Major League Baseball. Pepper played golf at Furman before winning 17 LPGA tournaments. Williams won state basketball titles at three Palmetto State high schools and Price served in the University of South Carolina athletic department for over 40 years.
