DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 9 Blue Devil women's tennis team was upset by No. 34 Clemson, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Clemson took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, snapping Duke's streak of six straight doubles point victories, as Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem defeated sophomore Jessi Robinson and senior Tory Zawacki, 8-4, at No. 2 before the 17th-ranked duo of Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge got past the third-ranked tandem of junior Melissa Mang and sophomore Amanda Granson, 8-2, at the top position to clinch the point for the Lady Tigers.
Action at No. 3 doubles saw Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc defeat the Blue Devil freshman pair of Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze, 8-6.
Singles play saw Mang put the Blue Devils on the board and tie the score at one all with a 6-1, 6-3 win over 124th-ranked van Adrichem at No. 4, but Salge defeated 17th-ranked Zsilinszka, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
Luc then got past Zawacki at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4, to increase Clemson's lead to 3-1, before Hadziselimovic defeated Granson at No. 6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), to give Clemson the victory.
Action at the top two slots saw the Lady Tigers come back from losing first sets to take both wins, as second-ranked Mijacika defeated sophomore Tara Iyer, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8, at No. 1 and Balda defeated 14th-ranked Nze, 5-7, 7-6, 10-8, at No. 2
Duke falls to 10-2 on the season and 3-1 in ACC play, while Clemson improves to 6-9 and 2-3 in conference competition.
The Blue Devils will next head to the Sunshine State for league matches with Miami (March 28 ? 6 p.m.) and Florida State (March 30 ? 12 p.m.).
