DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Blue Devil women's tennis team defeated defending national champion and second-ranked Georgia Tech, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Duke won the doubles point for the sixth straight match, as sophomore Jessi Robinson and senior Tory Zawacki defeated Georgia Tech's 50th-ranked pair of Sasha Krupina and Whitney McCray, 8-6, at No. 2 before the freshman duo of Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze defeated stopped Noelle Hickey and Christy Striplin, 8-5, at No. 3 to clinch the point and put the Blue Devils up early, 1-0
The third-ranked Duke tandem of junior Melissa Mang and sophomore Amanda Granson completed the doubles sweep ? Duke's fifth in six contests ? with an 8-6 win over Tech's 14th-ranked team of Kristi Miller and Kirsten Flower at the top position.
Singles play saw Striplin tie the match at 1-1 by defeating Mang, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 position and Flower gave Georgia Tech a 2-1 edge by getting past Granson, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5, but Duke rallied with straight-set singles wins from Robinson and 17th-ranked Zsilinszka to take a 3-2 lead.
No. 14 Nze then stopped No. 4 Amanda McDowell, 7-6 (6), 6-3, at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Blue Devils.
Sophomore Tara Iyer fell to sixth-ranked Miller in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7, at the top spot to account for the final margin.
The Blue Devils, winners of six straight, improve to 11-1 (4-0 ACC) on the year, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-4 (3-1 ACC).
Duke returns to action on Sunday, as the Blue Devils host 34th-ranked Clemson. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
