DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com recently sat down with women's lacrosse defender Sarah Kirchhofer for her senior profile. Kirchhofer is a native of Dallas, Texas, and she discusses why she wears No. 1, what her favorite food is, who's had the most impact on her athletic career, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: What is your nickname?
Sarah Kirchhofer: Kirch, or more endearingly, Kirchie.
GD: What do you have in your iPod before a game?
SK: Often times, Taylor Swift. Fun and upbeat, with great lyrics that I can sing along to.
GD: Why do you wear No. 1?
SK: I had hoped for one of my signature high school numbers (3, 7, 11), but things didn't quite work out I guess. I have overcome my initial embarrassment and grown to love being number one.
GD: What is your favorite movie?
SK: Father of the Bride. Since I was a little girl, this classic romantic comedy has been a favorite of both my dad and mine.
GD: Who's your favorite fictional character (from a TV show, growing up, etc.)?
SK: It's got to be Zack from Saved by the Bell.
GD: What's your favorite food?
SK: A really good chopped salad with avocado and blue cheese.
GD: What are your plans for after graduation?
SK: I'll be working in the D.C. area as a business analyst in Accenture's management consulting group.
GD: What would your dream job be?
SK: I would like to become an expert at body gliding over the Swiss Alps. Then, I could make a little money taking others on my adventures with me.
GD: Who's had the most impact on your athletic career and why?
SK: My high school lacrosse coach, Patty. Having picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time my junior year as well as growing up in Texas, a very underdeveloped area of the country for the sport, the thought never crossed my mind to want to play in college. Patty didn't just teach me the sport and the skills I would need to succeed. She inspired me to recognize my potential to grow as a player and compete at the highest level I possibly could. Being a part of Duke's team has been an amazing dream come true ? a dream that I never would have had if not for Patty's belief in me as a player and more importantly, as a person.
GD: What would the perfect end to your athletic career look like?
SK: Finally capturing that national championship to which we've come so very close each of my three years here.
GD: What's your favorite part of practice and why?
SK: Circle stretch during warm-up. I know I get to see my teammates every day, but getting the chance to catch up with everyone and tell stories during that time still makes me smile every time without fail.
GD: Being a few years removed from high school, what pops into your head when you think back to your high school career?
SK: Making home videos and short documentaries with my best friends. Also, rollerblading in my pink umbros.
GD: If you could go back-stage at any concert, what would it be?
SK: Journey. Preferably, though, I would most love to be a part of one of their music videos.
GD: Why did you choose to attend Duke?
SK: Since fifth grade, I've been saying I wanted to go to Duke. The combination of amazing academics, athletics and a somewhat southern feel have always drawn me to the school!
GD: What's your favorite video game?
SK: Rock Band ? because it combines the challenge of guitar hero and American Idol.
