
Blue Devils Finish Third At General Jim Hackler Championship

MURRELS INLET, S.C. ? Senior Michael Schachner fired a two-under 70 on Monday to lead Duke to a 16-over 304 in the final round of play at the General Jim Hackler Championship. The Blue Devils overcame an eight shot deficit to take the lead late in the day before running out of steam over the final five holes of play. Duke closed the event at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach in third place with a +37, 901 (302-294-304). Wake Forest claimed the tournament title at +33, while Florida State finished one stroke ahead of the Blue Devils.
Schachner continued his strong senior campaign with a fourth-place tie in the tournament. The Libertyville, Ill., native carded four birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys en route to a two-under 70. He now has seven rounds of under-par golf on the year and two top 5 finishes this spring. Schachner's final round 70 was the low round of the day and one of only three under-par rounds on Monday.
Sophomore Adam Long climbed into the top 20 at the event with a final round 74 (+2) to finish with a 12-over 228. Long birdied the opening hole of the day, but slipped to three-over at the turn after carding four bogeys over the next eight holes. The St. Louis, Mo., native rebounded to post birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14 to get back to even-par. After bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17, Long parred the par-5 18th hole to close the tournament tied for 20th.
Matthew Pierce also finished tied for 20th after shooting an eight-over 80 on Monday. Pierce started slowly with five bogeys and four pars on the front nine. He added a pair of birdies on the back nine, but also suffered three bogeys and a double-bogey to finish with a +12 over 228.
Junior Clark Klaasen got off to a solid start with 11 pars and a pair of bogeys through the first 13 holes. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native then suffered three straight double-bogeys to slip to eight-over on the day. He rebounded to par the final two holes for an eight-over 80. Klaasen finished the tournament tied for 27th with a 13-over 229 (76-73-80). Freshman Wes Roach struggled throughout the closing round en route to an 88. Roach finished tied for 63rd overall with a 242.
The average score in the final round at the demanding TPC of Myrtle Beach at more than five shots over par (77.81). Their were only 10 rounds of under-par golf during the 54-hole event, including sub-par rounds by Pierce (second round) and Schachner (third round).
Duke returns to action on Sunday, March 23 with the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
