DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke offensive guard Kyle Hill has been named Second Team Freshman All-America by Sporting News, the publication announced on Tuesday.
Hill, a 6-6, 270-pound native of Orlando, Fla., started all 12 contests in 2008 and helped the Blue Devils make significant improvement in total offense (+32.7), rushing offense (+42.2) and turnover margin (+10) while lowering their sacks allowed total to 22 -- down from 45 in 2007. In addition, Hill and the offensive line spearheaded the protection of quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, who earned All-ACC honors after ranking second in the ACC in total offense (206.1), passing yards per game (197.4) and touchdown passes (15) and third in pass efficiency (122.95).
“It is a huge honor to be recognized,” said Hill. “It gives me more motivation to work even harder and play better next year. It is pretty exciting. With the new coaching staff, the goal was to be able to run the ball better and prevent sacks. We worked really hard towards those goals and everybody wanted to achieve them together.”
Hill is the 10th Blue Devil since 2000 to earn Freshman All-America accolades, joining Ryan Fowler (2000; 3rd team), Jim Scharrer (2001; 4th), Ben Patrick (2003; 3rd), Chris Davis (2004; 3rd), Zack Asack (2005; HM), Michael Tauiliili (2005; 1st), Vince Oghobaase (2006; HM), Thaddeus Lewis (2006; HM) and Kevin Jones (2007; HM).
