DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke men's golf coach O.D. Vincent announced on Wednesday that Brinson Paolini, Adam Sumrall and Julian Suri all signed national letters of intent to play golf for the Blue Devils beginning with the 2009-10 campaign. All three members of the 2009 class are ranked among the top 30 players in the Polo Golf rankings, with two of them ranking in the top 10.
“We are so excited about these three young men,” said Vincent. “The commitment they show on the course, in the classroom and in their respective communities is a perfect fit with the Duke culture. Brinson, Adam and Julian are all terrific young men. We can hardly wait to get them here on campus. They will all have an immediate impact on our program.”
Paolini, currently ranked seventh in the Polo Golf Rankings, is an honorable mention Rolex Junior All-America and a two-time HP Scholastic Junior All-America selection. The Virginia Beach, Va., native has won nine major tournaments over the past three years. Paolini, a senior at Frank W. Cox High School, claimed his first AJGA win at the Horseshoe Bend Junior Classic in April when he recorded a 4-under-par 140. He also finished tied for sixth at the FootJoy Invitational by carding a 9-under-par 279. Paolini became the first player in Virginia history to win the Virginia Amateur title and the Virginia Junior title in the same year this summer. He also won the state high school title this season and finished runner-up in the 2008 AJGA Polo Junior Invitational. During the 2007 AJGA season, Paolini recorded four top-25 finishes including a tie for ninth at The Junior PLAYERS Championship, an AJGA Invitatonal.
“Brinson is a very consistent player with solid fundamentals,” said Vincent. “He had a terrific summer and had a lot of success in match play. With the National Championship shifting to a match play format, we are very focused on match play experience. Besides being an excellent player, Brinson is also a fabulous young man.”
Sumrall, a native of South Bend, Ind., is rated 30th in the Polo Golf Rankings. He has posted three top 20 finishes, including two top-10 showings, in five events in 2008. Sumrall placed second at the USGA Boys Junior Amateur Qualifier and fired an even-par 288 (74-73-72-69) to finish sixth at the AJGA HP Boys Junior Championship in July. Sumrall also made it to the second round of match play at the 2008 US Jr. Amateur at Shoal Creek.
“Adam is the definition of raw talent,” stated Vincent. “He is tall, strong and what I like most, he is a naturally great putter. Adam plays the game for himself and on his own terms. He loves Duke and will be a great fit on the course and in the classroom.”
Suri, a senior at Bartram Trail High School, is a 2008 second team Rolex Junior All-America selection and is currently rated fifth overall in the Polo Golf Rankings. He finished in the top 10 seven times at national events in 2008, including twice at AJGA invitational tournaments and twice in USGA events. Suri also made it to the final four of the 2008 AJGA Polo Junior Invitational. The St. Augustine, Fla., native also advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur in July and just missed qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open. He is one of only six players in Florida High School history to win back-to-back state individual medalist honors. Suri has wins to his credit at the 2008 USGA Boys Junior Amateur Qualifier and the 2007 Golfweek Junior Invitational. Suri won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with David Sanders after both players shot matching 9-under-par 135s at the Junior Invitational.
“Julian is hungry and is a natural competitor,” added Vincent. “He is polite and courteous yet fierce and intense. Julian is a powerful player that can go low when things start to click. The best thing about Julian is that he truly "feels" and "plays" the game of golf. He knows that the lowest score is the most important focus.”
Paolini, Sumrall and Suri are slated to join a cast of four returning players (Spencer Anderson, Adam Long, Matthew Pierce, Wes Roach) for the 2009-10 Duke golf campaign.
