DURHAM, N.C.?For the second consecutive season Duke University forward Mike Grella was selected as a semifinalist for the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy. Awarded to the nation's best Division I men and women's soccer player, Grella is among 15 athletes from around the country to earn the honor.
Grella headlined the Duke offense for the third consecutive season in 2008, tallying 14 goals and eight assists for a career-best 36 points. He captured the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the league in points for much of the season. A three-time All-ACC first team selection, Grella's 36 points are triple that of any other Blue Devil this season. He currently ranks ninth in the nation in points (1.89/gm) and 11th goals (0.74/gm).
The native of Glen Cove, N.Y., earned third team All-America honors as a junior after leading the Blue Devils in scoring with 26 points from 10 goals and six helpers. Grella is Duke's first player to earn the Offensive Player of the Year award from the ACC since its inception in 2004 and is the fourth Blue Devil to earn an ACC Player of the Year award since the beginning of the ACC in 1970. He is the eighth Duke player to reap first-team honors in three consecutive seasons. For his career, Grella has 41 goals and 27 assists to his name for 109 points. He closed out his career ranked seventh in career goals and eighth in points. He helped guide Duke to a 51-25-7 record in four seasons, an ACC Championship in 2006, and four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Grella is one of five representatives from the ACC on the list and would be the sixth Blue Devil to capture the annual award in Duke soccer history.
Division I college head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) will vote to determine the 2008 MAC Hermann Trophy recipient.
