Duke won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Virginia Tech will receive and defend the South endzone. Duke won its first opening coin toss in 11 chances this season. The Blue Devils had lost the previous 10 opening coin tosses.

Starting Streaks
Senior wide receiver Eron Riley earned his team-high 36th straight starting nod. Vince Oghobaase and Rob Schirmann each started for the 35th straight game. Kevin Jones and Cameron Goldberg extended their start streaks to 23 straight games. Fred Roland and Michael Tauiliili each started for the 22nd consecutive game. Junior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis sat out Saturday's contest to end his streak of 33 consecutive starts.
First Career Starts
Two players earned their first career starts on Saturday. True freshman running back Jay Hollingsworth started for the first time in 11 games. Sophomore defensive end Patrick Egboh started for the first time in his 18th career outing. Hollingsworth is the fifth true freshman to start this season for Duke. The Blue Devils have had 11 first time starters this year.
Asack Rushes For Career High
Junior quarterback Zack Asack led the Duke offense with a career-high 87 rushing yards on 24 carries. His previous career best was 58 yards on 17 carries against Navy during his freshman season in 2005.
Duke Causes Turnovers
The Blue Devils forced five turnovers against Virginia Tech to give them two or more caused turnovers in six of the 11 games this season with at least three turnovers in five of those outings. Duke has forced a turnover in eight total games on the year.
Tauiliili Records Sixth Interception
Senior linebacker Michael Tauiliili intercepted his third pass of the season and sixth of his career on Virginia Tech's opening drive. He has been responsible for seven turnovers this season with three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He leads the team in both interceptions and caused fumbles.
Daniels and Gainey Involved In Two Turnovers
True freshman safety Matt Daniels recovered a fumble on an option pitch in the first quarter and intercepted a pass in the second quarter. It is his first career fumble recovery and first career interception. Junior safety Catron Gainey tallied an interception and fumble recovery in the second quarter. The fumble recovery was the second of the season for Gainey while the interception was the first this season and second of his career.
Rey Causes Fumble
Junior linebacker Vincent Rey stripped the ball from Tyrod Taylor in the second quarter for Duke's fourth caused turnover of the game. The caused fumble was the first of the season for Rey and fourth of his career. Safety Catron Gainey recovered the fumble.
Blue Devils Record Four Sacks
The Duke defense recorded four sacks against Virginia Tech. It is the second straight game with at least four sacks and third time this season. They have two or more sacks in six of the 11 contests. Vince Oghobaase tallied one total sack to give him 4.5 on the season and 10 career sacks. Greg Akinbiyi now has a team-high five sacks for the year. Catron Gainey tallied his first career sack. Michael Tauiliili and Marcus Jones combined for a sack. Tauiliili has six career sacks while Jones has a total of 1.0 sack in his career.
Double Digit Tackles
Vincent Rey tallied 11 tackles in the game for his fourth double digit tackle game of the year. He now has 11 career games with 10 or more tackles. With 99 total tackles on the season, he is one shy of becoming the second Duke player to reach the century mark this season (Michael Tauiliili, 120).
Maggio Makes Field Goal
Sophomore kicker Nick Maggio gave Duke a 3-0 lead with a 39-yard field goal at the beginning of the second quarter. He has made 10-of-13 field goal attempts on the season, including 7-of-8 inside 40 yards. In his career he is 12-of-18 on field goal tries.
