DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University senior Mike Grella was one of thirty Division I soccer players from around the nation nominated for the Soccer News Net Player of the Year Award. Online fan voting will account for 40 percent of the total toward the award.
Fans can vote for Grella by logging on to: www.bigapplesoccer.com. Simply scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Men's College Player of the Year button to cast your ballot. Fan voting accounts for 40 percent toward the total.
Grella represents Duke in the Big Apple Soccer section along with Trevor Chidku, Nelson Becerra, and Neal Kitson of St. John's, Patrick Figueiredo of Aledphi, and Samson Malijani from Fairleigh Dickinson. The editors of each of the six sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to six local players for the award, each of which will be eligible for the regional player of the year award.
The native of Glen Cove, N.Y., highlights the Duke offense with an ACC best 14 goals and eight assists for 36 points. Grella most recently captured the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award, the first Blue Devil to capture the honor. He currently ranks fourth in the nation in points per game (2.0) and 11th in goals. The Blue Devils' leading scorer each of the past three seasons, Grella has had a hand in 22 of Duke's 30 goals this season and has four game-winners.
For his career, Grella has 41 goals and 27 assists for 109 points. He currently ranks seventh on both the career goals and points list.
The nominations included athletes playing at colleges within each site's coverage area, as well as athletes from the area playing college soccer elsewhere in the country. Five additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations. The final 60 percent of the vote will be cast by the editorial staffs of the six web sites.
