Duke vs. Wake Forest Game Notes
Starting Streaks
Senior wide receiver Eron Riley earned his team-high 33rd straight starting nod. Vince Oghobaase and Rob Schirmann each started for the 32nd straight game. Junior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis made his 31st consecutive start against Wake Forest. Kevin Jones and Cameron Goldberg extended their start streaks to 20 straight games. Sophomore running back Tony Jackson and true freshman Donovan Varner each earned their first collegiate starts.
Overtime
Duke has played eight overtime games all-time, posting a 2-6 record. The Blue Devils last overtime contest was 20-14 loss at North Carolina on Nov. 24, 2007. Duke is now 1-4 in road overtime contests.
Multi Touchdown Games
Junior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis threw touchdown passes of 33 and 20 yards to Clifford Harris for his 12th career game with two or more touchdowns. He has thrown two or more touchdown passes in five of the eight games this season and has a league-high 12 throwing scores on the year. Lewis now has 44 career touchdown passes, moving him into sole possession of fourth on Duke's career passing touchdowns list.
200-Yard Game
Thaddeus Lewis completed 18-of-26 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Lewis has thrown for over 200 yards in four of the eight games in 2008 and 14 times in his career.
Asack Throws First TD Pass Of the Year
Junior quarterback Zack Asack connected with Donovan Varner for a two-yard touchdown pass on third down in the first quarter. The touchdown pass was the first of the season for Asack and sixth of his career. It was his first touchdown pass since his freshman season when he threw one against Clemson in 2005.
Varner Catches First Touchdown Pass
True freshman Donovan Varner caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Zack Asack in the first quarter for his first career touchdown. Entering the game, Varner had four receptions for 47 yards on the season.
Harris Catches Pair Of Touchdowns
Senior running back Clifford Harris caught touchdown passes of 33 and 20 yards against the Demon Deacons. The two touchdown grabs give him three this season and three in his career. He also caught a touchdown pass earlier this season against Miami. He now has six total touchdowns in 2008 with three rushing and three receiving.
Huffman Posts Career Day
Sophomore tight end Brett Huffman recorded a career-high for receptions on Duke's first offensive drive when he caught three passes for 44 yards. Two of the three catches resulted in a first down to help lead to the Blue Devils' first touchdown of the game. Huffman finished the day with six receptions for 71 yards. His previous career best was two catches for 36 yards against Miami earlier this season.
Long Pass Play
Thaddeus Lewis hit senior wide receiver Eron Riley for a 52-yard gain in the fourth quarter. The pass play was Duke's longest of the season. The previous long was 49 yards from Lewis to Riley against Navy.
Riley Moves Up Career Receptions List
With six receptions against Wake Forest, senior wide receiver Eron Riley moved past Jomar Wright and Mark Militello in to ninth on Duke's career receptions chart. Riley now has 127 career catches and is 14 shy of Mike Grayson for eighth all-time.
Receptions Streaks
Eron Riley extended his streak to 22 straight games with at least one reception. He has caught five or more passes in five of the eight games this season. Johnny Williams has caught a pass in all seven games of his career.
Hollingsworth Records First Rushing Touchdown
True freshman Jay Hollingsworth gave Duke a 20-19 lead in the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown run. It is his first rushing touchdown of his career and second overall touchdown this season. Duke now has nine rushing touchdowns in 2008 after posting six as a team last year. Hollingsworth finished the game with 15 carries for a career-high 67 yards and one touchdown.
Williams Forces Fumble
Senior Glenn Williams caused a fumble on the opening drive of the third quarter. Williams now has two caused fumbles on the season and three in his career. The fumble was recovered by defensive tackle Kinney Rucker. It was his first career fumble recovery.
Defense Causes Turnover
The Duke defense came up with one takeaway against Wake Forest. The Blue Devils have forced at least one turnover in seven of the eight games this season. They entered the game with 18 caused turnovers and a +9 turnover margin. Duke led the ACC and ranked sixth nationally in turnover margin.
Robinson Tallies First Sack
Senior Charles Robinson sacked Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner in the second quarter for his first career sack. The Blue Devils have nine players who have recorded a sack this season and have posted 14 as a team.
Marshall Tallies Career High
Senior cornerback Jabari Marshall registered a career-high eight tackles against Wake Forest, including seven solo stops. His previous career high was five which he had against Notre Dame last year and against Georgia Tech and Miami this season.
Tackles For Loss
Duke recorded nine tackles for loss in the game. Senior Greg Akinbiyi had two tackles for loss and now has a team high 9.5 tackles for loss on the year. Vince Oghobaase also posted two tackles for loss to give him 4.5 on the season. Michael Tauiliili, Ayanga Okpokowuruk, Charles Robinson, Kinney Rucker and Adrian Aye-Darko each recorded one tackle for loss in the contest.
Marshall Moves In To Second All-Time In ACC History
Senior Jabari Marshall tallied three kickoff returns for 70 yards to move past North Carolina's Eric Blount in to second on the ACC career kick return yardage list. Marshall now holds school records with 95 kick returns and 2,317 kickoff return yards in his career.
Fourth Down Defense
Duke stopped Wake Forest on a pair of fourth down plays, including a 4th and five yards to go with just over 3:00 remaining in the game. Sophomore Chris Rwabukamba knocked away deep pass by Riley Skinner on the fourth down play. Earlier in the game, the Duke defense stopped a Skinner run on a 4th and three yards to go from the Duke five-yard line. The Blue Devils defense has held the opposition to 31.3 percent (5-of-16) fourth down conversion rate.
Fourth Down Offense
Thaddeus Lewis completed a four-yard pass to Eron Riley on 4th and 3 yards to go on Duke's final drive in regulation. The Blue Devils are now 7 of 14 (50 pct.) on fourth down conversions this season.
