STANFORD, CALIF. ? Playing only 90 minutes away from her hometown of Monterey, Calif., Duke University freshman Mina Harigae carded a one-under-par, 70, on Saturday in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, which is being played at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
As a team, the Blue Devils shot seven-over-par, 291, and are tied for seventh heading into the final round with a 36-hole total of 576. Duke had a very solid day but holes No. 9 and No. 10 were not so kind as the Blue Devils lost seven strokes on those holes on Saturday.
“I feel like we played well,” said Duke Assistant Coach Jan Dowling. “I thought we had a couple of holes that hurt us. The scores are really low here so every shot is obviously extremely important. The teams are very close so we can make up a lot of ground tomorrow and we are planning on it. I think there is a potential for a lot of birdies out there. If we start strong you never know what can happen.”
Leading the team standings is UCLA with a 36-hole total of 562, while Southern California (565), Oklahoma State (567), Arizona (571), Stanford (571), Vanderbilt (574), Duke (576), California (576), Pepperdine (577) and Arkansas (581) rounds out the top 10.
In the individual race, Oklahoma State's Caroline Masson (135) maintains the lead with UCLA's Ryann O'Toole (138) and Southern California's Lizette Salas (138) tied for second.
Through two rounds, Harigae is tied for ninth with a 141 after posting rounds of 71 and 70. She opened the day with another stellar start as she was two-under-par through four holes before suffering a bogey on No. 6. Harigae's first birdies of the day came on back-to-back par threes, including a birdie on No. 4 which she hit a seven-iron to within one foot.
On the back nine, Harigae opened with a bogey on No. 10 and then rang off seven straight pars before holing a 10-foot putt on No. 18 to close with a 70. Her back nine included key par-saving putts on both par fives -- No. 12 and No. 16.
Senior Jennie Lee played a great round of golf finishing with a one-over-par, 72, which ended on a sour note with a double-bogey on No. 18. She enters the final round tied for 26th with a 144. Lee opened the day with a par on No. 1 and a bogey on the second hole, but rebounded with four straight pars before notching consecutive birdies on No. 7 and No. 8. On the back nine, Lee was firing at the pins but couldn't get any putts to drop as she made eight straight pars before suffering the double-bogey on the final hole.
“I just left a couple of putts out there here and there,” said Lee. “I did hit some good shots today and got them on the green.”
Amanda Blumenherst, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., sandwiched a bogey and birdie with seven pars on the front nine as she made the turn at even par. On the back, she hit her tee shot on No. 10 to the right and had a tough approach shot and concluded with a double-bogey. Blumenherst responded with back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and No. 12 to get back to even par.
She went on to make two straight pars before suffering a double-bogey on the 490-yard, par five 16th. Blumenherst closed with two straight pars to finish with a 73. She enters the final round tied for 17th with a 143.
Both Alison Whitaker and Kim Donovan turned in a five-over-par, 77, on Saturday. Whitaker, who is from Melbourne, Australia, had a rough opening nine holes with two double-bogeys, two bogeys, one birdie and four pars as she made the turn at five-over-par, 40. On the back nine, she notched two birdies, including a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 14, and two bogeys to finish even par. Whitaker is tied for 65th with a 150.
Donovan enters Sunday tied for 52nd with a 148, after carding one birdie, four bogeys and one double-bogey to go along with 12 pars. Her birdie came on the 155-yard, par three 17th as she stuck a six-iron within one foot and sank the putt.
Continuing to play well as an individual, junior Yu Young Lee turned in a three-over-par, 74, on Saturday and is tied for 30th with a 145. Her 36-hole total of 145 is a career best.
Duke will tee off on Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m. (EST) along with California and Pepperdine.
“I think anything can happen on 18 holes,” said Jennie Lee. “We just really need to focus on being positive and doing out best out there. We cannot worry about any other teams and what they are shooting. We have to go out and do our thing.”
