DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke women's lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel announced the group of four captains who will lead the 2009 squad, seniors Caroline Cryer, Jess Adam, Christina Germinario, and Jessica McBride.
The foursome will head a group of 32 that includes seven freshmen.
Cryer is an attacker out of Centennial, Colo., setting the Duke single-season record for goals with 71 in 2007. That year she also controlled 66 draws and led the Blue Devils in the category, while her 18 assists ranked third on the team. She was a finalist for both the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Honda Lacrosse Award.
Returning as a captain from last season's squad, Cryer will look to bounce back after missing the 2008 season with a foot injury. She has experience at the national level, one of 49 players to represent the U.S. in 2008-09 as she was selected to the pool. She played with the Elite Team in 2007 and with the Developmental Team in 2005 and 2006.
Adam, a senior from Severna Park, Md., started all 21 games last season for Duke in the midfield, netting 18 goals and chipping in 17 assists, her 35 points ranking fifth for the Blue Devils. In 2007, Adam played in all 20 games, scoring five and adding four assists, playing for the third straight year on the U.S. Developmental team.
Germinario is a senior defender from Long Valley, N.J., who started 19 of 21 games in 2008 as an anchor of the Blue Devil defense. She recorded 29 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers in the back for Duke.
McBride, a senior defender out of Madison, N.J., appeared in six games last season, causing a turnover. In 2007, she played in 10 contests and scored a goal against Dartmouth. She tallied three ground balls, three draw controls, and a cause turnover during the campaign.
Duke went 13-8 in 2008, placing third in the ACC at 3-2, and reached the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season despite losing seven of 12 starters from 2007 to graduation and injury.
The Blue Devils return nine of 12 starters from last season, now in the thick of fall competition.
