DURHAM, N.C. ? The American Football Coaches Association announced the 22 members of the 2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Wednesday with Duke's Re'quan Boyette selected to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team.
Boyette becomes the second Blue Devil to be honored for his efforts in the community and the classroom with a spot on the AFCA Good Works Team. Defensive back Zaid Abdul-Aleem was selected in 1994.
A senior running back from Wilson, N.C., Boyette has offered his time to several local organizations. He was been a “Big Brother” to a student at Lakewood Elementary in the spring of 2006 and would spend a couple of hours of week with him. The two still keep in contact two years later.
In his free time, Boyette has volunteered at the Erwin Gardens Rehabilitation Center and the Forest at Duke, a pair of Durham nursing homes. He visited once or twice a week and talked with residents. He also volunteered at YE Smith Elementary School once a week and helped kids with their homework projects or tutored them for their classes.
Boyette has also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and the Durham Rescue Mission. He visited residents and helped serve meals at the Ronald McDonald House. He has been to the Durham Rescue Mission twice and helped out with serving meals. As part of Duke's community service programs, he has also gone to local elementary schools for the Read With the Blue Devils program where Duke student-athletes read to kids and stress the importance of reading.
This season marks the 17th year of the AFCA Good Works Team. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing. Candidates must also display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved.
The two 11-member teams ? one composed of players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) and a combined team representing the NCAA Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III and the NAIA ? honor players that embody the true spirit of “teamwork” and “giving back” through selfless contributions and commendable acts of kindness. The 22 college football players awarded this honor were selected by a special selection committee.
