A pair of true freshman Austin Kelly and Adam Banks earned their first career starts in the game. Kelly was one of four wide receivers to start and Banks started in place of the injured Charles Robinson at outside linebacker. Ronnie Drummer received his first start of the season and 11th career start.
Riley Goes Deep
On Duke's second drive of the game Thaddeus Lewis threw a deep pass to Eron Riley for a 76-yard touchdown. The scoring strike tied for the ninth longest in school history, matching Dave Brown's pass to Clarkston Hines against Wake Forest in 1989. The pass was the longest completion of Lewis' career and longest reception of Riley's career. Lewis recorded his previous career long last weekend at Northwestern with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Drummer. Riley had a 66-yard catch against Clemson in 2005.
Riley Scores on Back-to-Back Plays
Following a 61-yard kickoff return by Jabari Marshall, Thaddeus Lewis hit Eron Riley on the first play of the drive for a 35-yard touchdown. Lewis and Riley hooked up for touchdown passes on back-to-back offensive plays for the Blue Devils.
Four Touchdowns for Riley Match School Record
Eron Riley recorded touchdown receptions of 76, 35, 9 and 69 yards gave him four touchdowns in the game to match a school record previously set by Corey Thomas against Georgia Tech in 1997. The four touchdowns are the first four touchdown receptions of the season for Riley and give him nine for his career.
200-yard Receiving Game
Eron Riley recorded his first career 200-yard receiving game with six catches for 235 yards and four touchdowns. The 235 yards in the game are the fifth most in a single game in Duke history. It is only the sixth time in school history a receiver has posted over 200 yards. It was also the fourth time in his career that Riley caught over 100 yards in a game. He moved into a tie for sixth on Duke's career 100-yard receivers list, matching his position coach Scottie Montgomery, Stanley Dorsey and Cedric Jones.
Lewis Throws for Career High
Thaddeus Lewis completed 23-of-36 pass attempts for a career-high 428 yards and four touchdowns. The performance is just the 11th 400-yard passing game by a Duke quarterback and is the seventh highest total on the all-time single game list. His previous best was a 305-yard performance against Wake Forest in 2006.
