
Three Blue Devils Win in Singles on Opening Day of Southern Intercollegiates

Athens, Ga. ?The Duke men's tennis team used another week of practice to their advantage as they put together a strong showing on the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. on Friday.
In the Division I singles bracket, the Blue Devils were undefeated with wins in all four matches. Reid Carleton, a freshman from Naples, Fla., earned two victories on the day. One of only six players of the 70 in the bracket who did not receive a first round bye, Carleton, ranked No. 114 in the preseason ITA rankings, fought his way past both Rodrigo Santos of Winthrop, 6-4, 7-5, and Matt Brewer of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-1, to move on to the round of 32. He will next face No. 46 Cory Parr of Wake Forest, who is the No. 7 seed in the tournament.
Duke's highest ranked singles player, No. 57 Kiril Dimitrov, is the No. 8 seed in the tournament. He won his only match of the day, downing Winthrop's Vinicius Bortolatto 6-4, 6-4. He advances to face Javier Tori of USC Upstate in the round of 32.
Sophomore Dylan Arnould, ranked No. 110 in the preseason singles rankings, opened with a bye and then rallied to defeat Danny Dossetor of the Citadel in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Arnould will move forward to the round of 32 where he will have a tough match on Saturday against fifth seeded and No. 40 ranked Phillip Frayssinoux of Mississippi State.
Freshman Christopher Price and Alain Michel each lost in their opening matches of the Division II singles bracket. Price fell to Chris Nott of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-3 and Michel suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against Corey Anderson of Morehead State.
In doubles Duke has the top two seeds of the Division I bracket with each duo earning first round byes. Price and David Goulet are the top seed and will play their first match of the tournament on Saturday when they take on Wofford's George Kemodle and Andrew Stubbs, who won a close 9-8 decision on Friday.
As the second seed, Arnould and Michel will team up for the first time this season to face Amrit Narasimhan and Charlie Ramsay of Memphis, who also received a bye in the opening round.
The Blue Devils will continue play on Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. The two doubles tandems will play their first matches of the weekend in the round of 32. Also the next two rounds of singles and the first set of consolation matches will be held to finish up the day.
