DURHAM, N.C. - Nine members of the Duke men's lacrosse freshman class were tabbed as top-100 players by Inside Lacrosse this month, as three Blue Devils are among the top 30 freshmen in the nation.
Mike Manley, is Duke's highest ranked player as the defender comes in at No. 8. A native of Penn Yan, N.Y., Manley is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, as he led Penn Yan Academy to an appearance in the state finals and three semifinal appearances.
Two Under Armour All-America selections in midfielder Justin Turri (No. 22) and goalie Sean Brady (No. 27) are among the top 30 freshmen. Turri, a native of West Islip, N.Y., led West Islip High School to two state championships and one semifinal appearance, as the team compiled a record of 66-3 over his three-year career, including a perfect 23-0 mark his junior season.
Brady, who hails from Huntington, N.Y., led Huntington to a state championship as a junior as the squad went undefeated at 22-0. As a senior, the squad suffered the only loss of his two-year playing career in the state semifinals for a 20-1 mark.
Three more Blue Devil freshmen, including two more Under Armour All-Americas, are ranked in the top 50 as attackman Zach Howell comes in at No. 39, midfielder. Sam Spillane ranks 42nd and defenseman Jason Orlando sits at No. 48. Howell, a three-time all-division and all-county selection and 2007 Under-Armour All-American, played alongside Brady at Huntington High School for two years, as Huntington secured two state championships and compiled a four-year record of 76-6 during Howell's tenure.
Spillane, who hails from Darien, Conn., was a two-time All-America selection at Darien High School, as his squad notched three consecutive state championships in his final three years after a semifinal appearance as a freshman. Darien went 84-6 over four years with Spillane on the attack.
Orlando, a native of Lincoln-Sudbury, Mass., was an Under Armour All-America pick and DCL All-Star in 2007. He led Lincoln-Sudbury Regional to two state semifinal appearances as a sophomore and junior, as the squad went 39-17 over his three-year career.
Rounding out Duke's ranked freshmen, are defenseman Tom Montelli of Weston, Conn., (No. 70), midfielder Kevin Young of Chaminade, N.Y., (No. 86) and midfielder Tom Rynn of Fairport, N.Y., (No. 89). Montelli played for Duke lacrosse letterman Alex Whitten at Weston High School, and led the squad to two state semifinal appearances and a state championship as a senior, while Young was named Midfielder of the Year as a senior and was a member of two league championship squads at Chaminade High School. Rynn was a three-time all-county selection at Fairport High School and received All-America accolades in his final season.
“It's a wonderful honor to be recognized by Inside Lacrosse,” said Duke head coach John Danowski. “But they have a lot of work ahead of them as they transition to the college game.”
Midfielders Shamel and Rhamel Bratton rank first and second on the top-100 list, respectively, and are both attending Virginia, as are the No. 4 and 5 players, goalie Adam Ghitelman and long stick midfielder Bray Malphrus. The No. 3 spot belongs to attackman Jack Forster, who is attending Penn State.
Duke's 14-member freshman class boasts seven Under Armour All-America selections and ranks fourth in the nation overall. Virginia and Maryland rank first and second, respectively, with Georgetown sitting at No.3 followed by Duke and Syracuse.
