DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse incoming freshmen class has been ranked No. 2 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse. Head Coach Kerstin Kimel's group of eight was rated only behind Georgetown's incoming freshmen.
The Blue Devils' group includes Sarah Bullard of Needham, Mass., Virginia Crotty from New Vernon, N.J., Taylor Fleming of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Emma Hamm from Wayne, Pa., Miller Hughes of Cockeysville, Md., Christie Kaestner from Easton, Md., Morgan Miller of Denver, Colo. and Caroline Spearman from Reisterstown, Md.
Individually, Bullard was rated the No. 2 player overall, Hamm was ranked No. 7, Miller took the No. 9 spot and Crotty was ranked No. 19. Kaestner and Spearman were listed as players to watch. All six of those freshmen played in the UnderArmour All-America Classic in June at Loyola College in Baltimore, Md. This year's crop of All-Americas featured 90 players from 13 states.
Of the group, Bullard, Crotty and Hamm were all members of the U.S. under-19 team that won the IFLWA world championship in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, last month.
Duke finished the 2007 season with a 16-4 record. They won a share of the ACC regular season title for the fourth year in a row, advanced to the Final Four for the third consecutive season and accumulated the third-highest win total in school history. The Blue Devils finished sixth in the final rankings and were awarded the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The team will return seven of 12 starters and 24 of 31 letterwinners in 2008.
