Charlottesville, Va. ? Two of Duke's young players finished off the UVA Fall Invitational with victories as Reid Carleton and David Lue won their consolation finals matches on Sunday.
Carleton, a freshman from Naples, Fla., faced Marcus Echtler of Stetson in the red bracket, which is the top bracket in the tournament. Carleton won the first set 6-4 but Echtler forced a super tiebreaker with a 7-5 victory in the second set. In the super tiebreaker Carleton was able to come away on top with a 10-7 advantage to improve to 3-1 in his first season at Duke.
Lue, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, also won in a super tiebreaker. Playing in the brown singles bracket, Lue squared off against Virginia's Andrew Downing. After losing the first set 6-4, Lue came out firing and cruised to a 6-0 second set win. He then used the momentum to easily win the super tiebreaker 10-2 and take his singles record to 3-1 on the year.
The Blue Devils will return to action next weekend when they travel to Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiates. The tournament will begin Friday, Sept. 21 and conclude on Monday, Sept. 24.
