Starting Streaks
Long snapper Casey Hales made his team-leading 37th consecutive start. Matt Rumsey extended his starts streak to 26 straight games, earning the start at center. Rush end Patrick Bailey has now started 23 consecutive games and Eron Riley earned his 16th straight starting nod. Three players earned their 15th consecutive starts with Zach Maurides and Rob Schirmann each starting on the offensive line and Vince Oghobaase playing defensive tackle at the start. Starting in place of the injured Charles Robinson was junior linebacker Marcus Jones, who earned his first career start on defense. Jones now has eight career starts with the other seven coming on offense, including one at quarterback and six at wide receiver. Defensive end Wesley Oglesby recorded his first career start in place of the injured Ryan Radloff.
Jomar Wright Scores Touchdown
Senior wide receiver Jomar Wright caught his second touchdown pass of the season, a 4-yard touchdown from Thaddeus Lewis to cap an 11-play, 86-yard drive that took 5:24 off the clock. Wright now has touchdown receptions in back-to-back games and six scoring strikes in his career. He has caught a touchdown pass in all four of his collegiate seasons at Duke. Raphael Chestnut had two catches for 47 yards on the drive, including a 27-yard grab on fourth down and seven from the Northwestern 31-yard line.
King Catches Second Touchdown Pass
Sophomore tight end Brandon King caught a seven-yard pass from Thaddeus Lewis for his second touchdown of the season and his career. King also had a six-yard touchdown reception in the season opener against Connecticut.
Drummer Big Play
On third down and 11 yards to go, Thaddeus Lewis hit Ronnie Drummer in stride for a 56-yard touchdown pass, the longest play from scrimmage for the Blue Devils this season and longest of Drummer's career. The pass was also the longest of Lewis' two-year career. His previous long was a 54-yard pass last season against Miami. The touchdown reception was the second of Drummer's career as he had one against Clemson as a freshman in 2004. Overall Drummer has six career touchdowns now, including three rushing, two receiving and one kick return.
Top-10 Career Touchdown Passes
The three touchdown passes by Thaddeus Lewis in the first half gives him five on the season and 16 in his career, moving him into a tie for ninth on the career passing touchdowns list at Duke. Lewis is now seven touchdowns shy of sixth on the career charts.
First Half Success
In the first half, Duke's quarterback Thaddeus Lewis was 14-of-15 for 186 yards and three touchdowns. He completed his last 12 passes of the half and led Duke to five conversions on six third down situations. This season the Blue Devils have scored first in two of their three games and led at halftime against both Connecticut and Northwestern.
Consecutive Completions
Duke's Thaddeus Lewis completed 15 straight pass attempts in the game, matching the second longest streak in school history. Ben Bennett also completed 15 straight passes against North Carolina in 1983. D. Bryant holds the Duke record with 16 straight completions vs. N.C. State in 2000. Lewis finished the game completing 19-of-23 passes for an 82.6 completion percentage. He passed for 246 yards and three touchdowns.
Interception for Tauiliili
Michael Tauiliili tallied his first career interception on the second play of the game and returned it 24 yards. It is his second forced turnover of the season as he forced a fumble last weekend at Virginia. The turnover was the first of the year for Northwestern, who did not turn the ball over in its first two games. The junior middle linebacker from Houston, Texas received his second start of the season and has led the team in tackles the past two seasons.
Leon Wright Gets Interception
Leon Wright intercepted a pass in the endzone during the second quarter for his first of the season and second of his career. He also recorded an interception last season against Florida State.
Bailey Sacks Quarterback
Senior rush end Patrick Bailey forced Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher out-of-bound for a two-yard loss in the first quarter to give him 2.5 sacks on the season for a loss of 17 yards. In his four-year career, Bailey has 6.5 sacks and 22 tackles for a loss. Bailey also had a forced fumble in the game, giving him four for his career and set a career high with 12 tackles.
Rey Double Digits
Vincent Rey tallied double digit tackles for the second time in three games this season. He had 11 tackles, two tackles for a loss and four pass breakups. He also had 17 tackles in the season opener against Connecticut.
Glenn Williams Career High
Glenn Williams tallied his first ever double digit tackle game as he posted a career-high 10 tackles including seven solo stops and two pass breakups.
First Start a Good One
Starting his first career game, Wesley Oglesby came up big down the stretch for Duke with three tackles, one sack and four quarterback hurries.
64 Yard Punt
Redshirt freshman Kevin Jones booted a career-long 64-yard punt in the fourth quarter, pinning Northwestern at their own 10-yard line. He passes his previous career high of 53 yards which he set last weekend at Virginia. Two of his three punts in the game went for over 40 yards and were downed inside the 20-yard line. On the year he has four punts downed inside the 20-yard line on 11 attempts.
Next Game
Duke will play its next game against Navy on Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m. (ET) in Annapolis, Md. The game will be televised by CSTV.
