DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse team announced that seniors Caroline Cryer and Abigail Meyer will be captains for the 2008 season. They head a senior class of seven and welcome a freshmen class of 10.
Cryer, an attacker from Centennial, Colo., set the Duke single-season record for goals with 71 in 2007. Her 66 draw controls led the Blue Devils in that category and her 18 assists were third on the team. Cryer was a player of the year finalist for both the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Honda Lacrosse Award. She was also named to IWLCA/US Lacrosse's, Inside Lacrosse's and Womenslacrosse.com's first team All-America lists. As a sophomore, Cryer started all 21 games at attack and scored 30 goals and 11 assists. She recorded 31 draw controls, picked up 28 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers. As a freshman Cryer tallied 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points as she appeared in all 21 games with nine starts. She compiled 26 ground balls, 13 draw controls and seven caused turnovers and was named Duke's Rookie of the Year. Cryer spent her sophomore and junior years on the U.S. Developmental squad before making the Elite Team this past summer. She is majoring in Economics.
Meyer, who hails from Alexandria, Va., played in 20 games in 2007 as a defender with three starts. She scooped up nine ground balls, picked up two draw controls and caused four turnovers. Meyer played in seven games as a sophomore and four as a freshman. She was named to the ACC Honor Roll in 2005. All four of Meyer's siblings graduated from Duke. She is majoring in sociology with a certificate in markets and management.
Duke finished the 2007 season with a 16-4 record and 4-1 record in the ACC. They won a share of the ACC regular season title for the fourth year in a row, advanced to the Final Four for the third consecutive season and accumulated the third-highest win total in school history. The Blue Devils finished sixth in the final rankings and were awarded the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The team will return seven of 12 starters and 24 of 31 letterwinners in 2008.
