DURHAM, N.C. --- The Duke women's lacrosse team was one of only three Division I schools to earn the distinction of being named a merit squad for 2007, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association this week. The IWLCA recognized squads that held a team GPA of 3.00 or greater for the 2006-07 academic year. Duke's team GPA was 3.43, edged out in all of Division I only by the University of Albany (3.45) and Virginia Tech (3.44). The Blue Devils were the only one of these three teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament. 40 more Division I schools with team GPA's of 3.00 or better were named as honor squads.
Additionally, the IWLCA recognized 157 women from 57 Division I schools by naming them to the 2007 Academic Honor Roll. Included in this group were five Blue Devils: senior attacker Kim Wathey, senior attacker Meeghan Ford, senior defender Meghan Ferguson, junior midfielder Rachel Shack and junior defender Sarah Kirchhofer. Wathey earned a psychology degree and is a native of South Huntington, N.Y., Ford received her diploma in biological anthropology and anatomy and comes from Rochester, N.H., and Ferguson earned her degree in public policy with minors in economics and history and hails from Lutherville, Md. Shack is a history major from Andover, Mass., and Kirchhofer is psychology major with a certificate in markets and management who comes to Duke from Dallas, Texas. Lindsey Pieper of Virginia Tech was named the scholar-athlete of the year.
