WILLIAMSBURG, VA ? Duke shot a closing round 11-over 291 on Saturday to finish 13th overall in the 2007 NCAA Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. The Blue Devils, the only ACC school to make the final cut in each of the last three NCAA Championships, closed the event with a score of 1140 (+20).
"I am proud of the way our guys battled throughout the tournament," said interim head coach Brad Sparling. "We didn't make as many putts today as we would have liked, but our guys can hold their heads up high. We had a good year and I am extremely pleased with the way they handled themselves on and off the course."
Stanford captured the team crown with an 11-under 1109. The Cardinal led the way for the entire tournament and finished 12 shots ahead of second place finisher Georgia (+1). Charlotte and Lamar finished tied for third at five-over (1125), while Coastal Carolina placed fifth with an eight-over 1128. Jamie Lovemark (USC) captured the individual crown with a nine-under 281, while Kyle Stanley (Clemson) finished second at seven-under.
Freshman Adam Long paced the Blue Devils in the final round with a one-over 71. He got off to a slow start on Saturday carding bogeys on three of his first four holes of play. He recovered to play the remaining 14 holes at two-under with birdies on No. 17 and No. 5. The St. Louis, Mo., native hit 15 greens on the day and had several birdie putts lip out during the closing round. Long finished the tournament tied for 60th with an 11-over 291.
Michael Quagliano capped off the event with a two-over 72 in the final round. The Ardsley, N.Y., native finished 77th overall with a 17-over 297. Quagliano opened with a bogey on No. 10 but quickly got back to even-par with a birdie on the par 4 11th hole. He had a pair of bogeys sandwiched around a birdie on the par 5 15th and closed his opening round at one-over. Quagliano slipped to three-over with a double-bogey on No. 4 before carding a birdie on No. 8 to help close his round at two-over.
Senior Jake Grodzinsky and sophomore Clark Klaasen both got off to slow starts on Saturday before battling their way to four-over 74s. Grodzinsky bogeyed the first four holes before playing the rest of the way at even-par with birdies on No. 15 and No. 5. The Cornville, Ariz., native finished tied for 53rd with a nine-over 289. Klaasen, who also finished tied for 53rd, parred the first hole before suffering five straight bogeys. He rebounded to birdie No. 16 and No. 17 before a bogey on No. 18 dropped him back to four-over. Klaasen registered seven pars, one birdie and a bogey on the front nine to cap off his round of 74.
Junior Michael Schachner, who carded an NCAA Championship record 60 on Friday, shot a five-over 75 in the final round to finish tied for 31st with a three-over 283 (79-69-60-75). Schachner carded one birdie, 13 pars, two double-bogeys and two bogeys in the final round.
NOTES
*** Duke's score of 1140 is the lowest four-round score by the Blue Devils in NCAA Championship history. The score topped the previous mark by 22 strokes.
*** Long had three rounds of 71 in the tournament. He played holes 5-9 at six-under for the tournament with six birdies and 14 pars.
*** Schachner finished the tournament with a team-high 19 birdies, including 11 during his round of 60 on Friday.
