NEWTON, Mass. -- Duke (11-2, 3-1 ACC) finished up their regular season road slate with an impressive 16-8 victory over Boston College (5-8, 1-3 ACC) on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils were led by senior attacker Kristen Waagbo (three goals and five assists), sophomore midfielder Carolyn Davis (four goals) and junior attacker Caroline Cryer (four goals). Waagbo's five dishes tied the Duke record for most assists in one game.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead only :35 seconds into the game but it would be all Duke for the next 40 minutes of the game. The Blue Devils would score seven straight and 15 of the next 17 goals to take a commanding 15-3 advantage with less than 20 minutes left in the game. Included in the first stretch of seven consecutive scores were three goals by Davis and two assists each from Waagbo and senior attacker Leigh Jester. Jester would finish with one goal and three assists.
The Blue Devil defense was outstanding for 53 of the 60 minutes of the game. They only allowed four goals in that span and goalkeepers Kim Imbesi and Regan Bosch combined for 11 saves. Boston College would narrow their margin of defeat to eight goals by tallying five of the last six scores over the final third of the contest, but it was not nearly enough to overcome Duke's efforts. Freshman Alexandra Ryan would score her first collegiate goal and Duke's only goal in the last 20 minutes on a pass from Jester with 3:08 remaining.
The Eagles actually ended up out-shooting the Blue Devils 29-28 and won the draw control battle 16-10. However, they turned the ball over 20 times and let Duke convert on 15 of 16 clears. Sophomore attacker Jenna McCabe led Boston College with three goals.
“This past week in practice we really worked on defense and getting back to the basics,” said senior midfielder and captain Rachel Sanford after the game when asked about the defensive effort. “I think it really paid off. Everyone came into this game with a defensive goal and we did what we really wanted to do--- pressure them out, had more communication and good slides.”
Waagbo set the all-time Duke assists record on Feb. 18 this season against Stanford and now has 100 career assists after tallying 28 in 13 games. She leads the ACC in assists per game with 2.15 and points with 4.54. Waagbo is within range of other school records this season as well. She currently has 146 career goals which are good for fourth place behind former Duke player Kate Kaiser with 154. Katie Chrest holds the school record with 216. Waagbo's 240 points are second on the all-time Duke list with Chrest in first with 287.
Cryer leads the ACC and is third in the NCAA in goals per game with 3.62. At that pace, she could break Chrest's all-time Duke season record of 70 in 21 games. Her 46 draw controls this season lead the Blue Devils in that category.
Duke will return home for two games next weekend. The Devils will play archrival North Carolina on Fri., April 20 at 7 p.m. in a critical matchup and then take on Longwood on Sun., April 22 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played in Koskinen Stadium.
