DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 21 Duke men's tennis team improved to 9-6 (2-1 ACC) with a 5-2 victory over 20th-ranked N.C. State on Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Stadium. N.C. State falls to 16-5 (1-3 ACC) with the loss.
With competitive doubles matches across the board, Duke won the doubles point, taking two of three hard-fought matches. The Blue Devil duo of senior Peter Rodrigues and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov rallied back from a 4-1 deficit to post Duke's first doubles win, defeating Andre Iriarte and Christian Welte, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
The eighth-ranked tandem of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet then posted an 8-4 victory over the 11th-ranked Wolfpack team of Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt at the No. 1 slot to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
At No. 2, junior Alex Stone and freshman Dylan Arnould fell to James McGee and Jay Weinacker by a score of 8-5.
Singles action saw Duke take the first three matches to clinch the victory, as 73rd-ranked Rodrigues put the Blue Devils up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Weinacker at No. 3, 72nd-ranked Atas followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over 38th-ranked Cavaday at No. 1, and 43rd-ranked Dimitrov posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Noblit at No. 2.

“This was a great win for us over a really good team,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “N.C. State has really improved their program and we beat a really good conference team today. We hope to use this win as motivation for the next week as we continue to play ACC matches at home, and then on the road.”
Duke will face 27th-ranked Florida State on Friday and 35th-ranked Miami on Sunday. Both matches will be played at Ambler Tennis Stadium with first serve set for 2:30 p.m. each day.
