WASHINGTON, D.C. -- No. 4 Duke (7-1, 0-1 ACC) came back from an 8-5 halftime deficit on Sunday afternoon to defeat No. 10 Georgetown (3-2, 1-0 Big East) by a score of 12-11. The Blue Devils also trailed 10-9 with less than 10 minutes to play before surmounting a run that led to the win. Senior attacker Kristen Waagbo led Duke with three goals and two assists, all of which came in the second half.
For the first 20 minutes of the game, neither team could put together more than a one-goal lead, and the score was knotted 4-4 after a goal by Duke's sophomore midfielder Carolyn Davis with 10:35 left in the first half.
Georgetown took over for the remainder of the half, scoring three consecutive goals and four of the last five before halftime. Included in that run were goals by Hoyas' senior attackers Coco Stanwick (her second of the game) and Schuyler Sutton (her third). Neither Stanwick nor Sutton would score for the remainder of the contest.
In the second half, Duke's defense locked down Georgetown. The Blue Devils only allowed six shots and did not give up a goal for the first 14 minutes of the half. The Hoyas were able to manage a mere three goals in the second half.
The defensive improvements came right as the offense was turning it up as well. Shutout in the first half, Blue Devil top scorers Waagbo and junior attacker Caroline Cryer were unstoppable after halftime as they were responsible for five of the seven Duke goals. The Blue Devils put together a stretch of four straight goals to open the half and take the lead, 9-8, and then strung together three straight after going back down 10-9. Cryer finished with two goals and an assist on the day.
Senior midfielder Rachel Sanford scored her team-best third game-winning goal with 40 seconds left on a pass from Waagbo, which put the Blue Devils up 12-10. Hoya redshirt senior Brittany Baschuk was able to cut the Duke lead to one when she scored with 16 seconds remaining, but the Blue Devils won the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock for their third straight win.
Cryer now has 28 goals through eight games for Duke, averaging 3.5 per game. She also leads the team in draw controls with 21.
Waagbo set the all-time Duke assists record on Feb. 18 against Stanford. She now has 88 career assists after tallying 15 in eight games. Waagbo is within range of breaking several other records this season as well. She currently has 132 career goals, which puts her in fifth place behind former Blue Devil Lauren Gallagher with 140. Katie Chrest holds the school record with 216. Waagbo's 219 points are third on the all-time Duke list, with Chrest in first with 287 and Tricia Martin in second with 236. The 312 shots Waagbo has taken is good for fifth-best in the program's history, while Kate Kaiser sits in fourth with 325 and Chrest holds the top position with 528.
Duke will return home for an ACC contest with Virginia Tech on Fri., March 23 at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
