DURHAM, N.C. - Despite a career-high 23 points from Greg Paulus, the 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils suffered a 68-67 loss to Florida State in ACC basketball action on Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke honored former All-America J.J. Redick by retiring his jersey No. 4 at halftime.
The Blue Devils fall to 18-5 overall and 5-4 in ACC action while the Seminoles improve to 17-6 overall and 5-4 in the league.
Redick was a two-time National Player of the Year for the Blue Devils and finished as the NCAA career three-point leader as well as the ACC's all-time leading scorer. Redick was joined by retirees in fellow Orlando Magic player Grant Hill and Mike Gminski, who called the game for FSN, as both were courtside at halftime for the ceremony.
Duke rallied after falling behind 68-62 with 3:20 on the clock. Paulus made one foul shot at the 3:08 mark and DeMarcus Nelson drilled a jumper with 2:32 remaining to cut the lead to three at 68-65. Florida State's bench was whistled for a technical foul just after Nelson's bucket, and Jon Scheyer pulled the Blue Devils to within one point with two free throws. Neither team would score the rest of the way with Duke missing five field goal attempts and Florida State going 0-for-3 from the floor on the offensive end.
Trailing 68-67, Duke called timeout with 7.6 seconds remaining, and after Paulus missed a layup the Blue Devils retained possession on a jump ball situation with 4.2 seconds left. Josh McRoberts received the inbounds pass but misfired from in the lane, and Nelson's follow was off the mark before time expired.
Duke got off to a good start, holding leads of 7-0, 17-5 and 27-10 in the first 11 minutes of the game. Florida State, however, closed the half on a 23-9 run to trail 36-33 at intermission.
Paulus connected on eight-of-13 field goal attempts including a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Nelson scored 14 while McRoberts contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Scheyer, who came off the bench to score nine points, made all seven of his foul shots to push his streak of consecutive free throws made to 36 - the third-longest such streak in Duke history.
Al Thornton led the Seminoles with 21 points and eight rebounds while Toney Douglas added 15 points and four assists.
