STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 2 Duke (2-0) won Sunday over No. 18 Stanford (1-2, 1-1 MPSF), 14-8, although it was not nearly as easy as their first win over Denver on Friday. Senior attacker Kristen Waagbo set the all-time Duke assists record only two minutes into the game. She broke the previous mark of 75 set by former Blue Devil standout Tricia Martin, who played from 1997-2000. Waagbo had tied that mark with her three assists in the Blue Devils' game at Denver. It is the sixth straight year that Duke has started the season 2-0.
Conditions were much better on Sunday than they were for the Blue Devils' game at Denver. At Stanford, the temperature was in the low 60's, and it was party cloudy with moderate wins. The game time temperature in Denver was 35 degrees with light flurries and 45 mile-per-hour winds.
Duke started off the game by opening up a 3-0 lead on the strength of two goals by sophomore midfielder Carolyn Davis. The Blue Devils scored a mere 38 seconds into the game, besting the 43 seconds it took them to score again Denver on Friday.
The Cardinal kept the game close in the first half as they scored three of the next four goals, including two by senior midfielder Liz Piselli. Freshman midfielder Lauren Schmidt contributed one goal and one assist in that stretch.
The next two goals went to the Blue Devils, and they looked like they would take a comfortable lead into halftime. Junior attacker Caroline Cryer continued her early season tear, scoring three goals in the first half after notching seven in Friday's game. Redshirt sophomore defender Kim Pastrana tallied her first goal of the season, which put Duke up 6-3.
Stanford once again came back from three goals down, scoring three straight goals overlapping halftime to tie the game 6-6 early in the second half. Junior attacker Daphne Patterson scored two of those three goals, including the tying tally. Patterson would finish the game with three goals.
Duke responded by scoring four straight goals and eight of the next ten to ice the game and win 14-8. Three of those scores and one assist were by senior captain and midfielder Rachel Sanford. Sophomore attacker Megan Del Monte added a goal and an assist in that stretch.
Cryer finished with five goals for the game, bringing her season total to a team-high twelve. Waagbo had her second straight game with three assists and now has 78 in her career. Freshman midfielder Christie Barnes scored her first collegiate goal in the second half, and added her first assist to her resume as well.
The Blue Devils will play their next game and first home contest of the season on Friday, Feb. 23. The Richmond Spiders will visit Koskinen Stadium at 7 p.m. that evening. The Blue Devils have a quick turn-around that weekend, as the William & Mary Tribe come to town for a 12 p.m. face-off on Sunday, Feb. 25. That game is part of the first of two doubleheaders that the Duke women's and men's lacrosse teams will have at Koskinen this year.
