GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led by three-time selection Eli Nichols, Duke placed six student-athletes on the 2006 All-ACC Academic Football Team, as announced on Tuesday by league commissioner John Swofford.
Joining Nichols, a senior nose guard from Crawfordville, Fla., on the team were Duke teammates Patrick Bailey (Jr., DE, Elmendorf, Texas), Alex Feinberg (Sr., P, Thomasville, Ga.), Zach Maurides (Jr., OG, Glenview, Ill.), Matt Rumsey (Jr., C, Dunwoody, Ga.) and Nick Stefanow (Jr., TE, Wheeling, W.Va.).
Bailey, who finished third on the team in total tackles with 77 in 2006, is a repeat selection from a year ago. Nichols, a two-time second team Academic All-America choice, joins former Duke standouts Ben Fordham, Bill Obremskey, Mike Diminick, Sims Lenhardt, Ben Erdeljac, Chris Douglas and Travis Pearson as the only players in school history to be named to the Academic All-ACC team three times.
To be eligible for consideration, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Nine players who earned first or second team, or honorable mention all-conference honors this past season secured spots on the 37-member squad.
Maryland's Adam Podlesh, who finished his career ninth on the ACC career punting list with a 43.13 average and a four-time academic team selection, heads up a list of 18 players that are repeaters from last year's academic team, including four players -- Duke's Nichols, Georgia Tech's Travis Bell, Virginia Tech's Pace and Miami's Jon Peattie -- who earned berths on the academic team for a third straight year.
Miami led the conference with eight total selections followed by Duke and Boston College with six each.
