DURHAM, N.C. - Lacrosse magazine released its preseason college rankings for the 2008 season on December 19, as the Blue Devil men are tabbed No. 1 and the Duke women are listed at No. 3.
The rankings, compiled by Lacrosse magazine staff after consultations with coaches, tab Duke as the preseason favorite to capture the NCAA Division I men's championship, as ACC rival Virginia sits at No. 2 and defending NCAA Champion Johns Hopkins is listed at No. 3. Georgetown and Notre Dame round out the top five.
The Blue Devil men return eight of 10 starters and 32 of 40 letterwinners from a team that concluded the 2007 season with a 17-3 overall ledger, matching the NCAA record for wins in a season set previously by the 2005 Duke, 2006 Hofstra and 2006 Virginia squads. Duke captured the ACC regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the national title game for the second time in three seasons.
In 2008, Duke will face seven opponents that appear in the preseason rankings, including all three opposing ACC squads, three of the top-five picks and five teams listed in the top 10. The Blue Devils were predicted to finish atop the ACC by Inside Lacrosse magazine earlier this month.
On the NCAA Division I women's side, Northwestern is predicted to win its fourth straight NCAA Championship, as ACC foe Virginia is picked for a No. 2 finish and the Blue Devils sit at No. 3. Another conference rival, Maryland, comes in at No. 4 with Syracuse tabbed to finish fifth.
The Duke women will return seven of 12 starters and 23 of 31 letterwinners in 2008 from a team that reached the NCAA Final Four for the fourth time in the program's 12-year history in 2007. The Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 16-4, including a 4-1 mark in the ACC, which tied them for the regular season conference title.
Duke will meet 11 teams that appear in the preseason listings in 2008, including three ACC opponents, three top-five squads and six top-10 choices.
